JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary
The position works under the direction of, and in collaboration with the Acute Care/Emergency Department, Director of Nursing, and providers, to ensure quality patient care and compliance with regulatory standards for the area.
The position will provide oversight to nursing care while leading, coaching, mentoring, and instructing clinical staff. This will include assistance in providing orientation and ongoing training and development. The ADON will provide clinical assistance during times of high volume, high patient acuity, or emergency call-ins until a replacement can be determined.
The job requires highly professional communication with patients, families, medical staff, ancillary departments and administration. Other major job functions include collection and reporting of quality data, documentation audits, rounding on patients and staff, and monitoring variances from expected outcomes. This position will always support best practices for quality of patient care and safety.
Job Duties
The following areessential functions of this job.
+ Assists in the monitoring of day-to-day patient care, ensuring optimal quality of care exceeding patient expectations.
+ Identifies opportunities for improvements in policies, procedures and processes related to patient care, offering solution orientated feedback, and following up with plans of correction, to include researching up to date information.
+ Assists in the monitoring of the ER staff, identifying needs for improvements and working with the DON to provide training and education ensuring all staff are performing competently, safely and efficiently (while maintaining education files for employees).
+ Provides support and assistance to DON regarding improvement projects.
+ Assist with implementing change and managing staff's response to change.
+ Assists with the department quality assurance program.
+ Demonstrate knowledge of the Chain of Command, and the facilities Emergency Disaster Preparedness processes, with the ability to respond and implement if the need arises.
+ Communicates needed information and follows up with DON and staff.
+ Communicates critical patient information to qualified personnel as needed.
+ Assist in the through put of patients within the system(s), to include resource allocation.
+ Assists in education for both, the Emergency Department and Acute Care, with Acute Care ADON.
+ Identifies need for improvements in the Emergency Department EMAR, workflow, and processes, and implements changes, in partnership with the DON.
Stroke and Trauma Job Duties
+ Assists in the monitoring of the ER and AC staff, identifying needs for improvements and work with the DON to provide training and education ensuring all staff are performing competently, safely and efficiently in trauma and stroke care.
+ Participate in the development and planning of goals and objectives related to trauma care.
+ Coordinate and participate in Trauma committee and complete chart review process through tertiary review.
+ Collaborate with finance for monitoring of trauma and stroke patient financial reimbursement issues as directed by DON.
+ Participate in the budget process: anticipate trends, future needs of the trauma program.
+ Serves as a liaison to administration, representing the Trauma and Stroke Program on various hospital and community committees to enhance and foster a fiscally sound Trauma and Stroke Program.
+ Serve as liaison for acute care and emergency department to monitor for educational requirements as needed for trauma and stroke designation.
+ Supervise adherence to hospital policies and procedures and standards through observation, medical record review, staff feedbacks and other appropriate sources for trauma and stroke best practice.
+ Interpret and implement policies and procedures; make recommendations for revisions; assist with updating policies and procedures in relation to trauma and stroke care.
+ Maintains and/or coordinates trauma and stroke registry data.
+ Attends Regional stroke and trauma coordinator meetings, fostering relationships within community.
+ Coordinates stroke and trauma presentations and visits.
+ Participate in case review.
+ Develop and monitor the trauma/stroke PI program in collaboration with the trauma/stroke program assistant medical director.
+ Communicate effectively with a wide variety of intra- and inter-facility staff and administration using both oral and written communication.
+ Ensures timely primary, secondary and tertiary review of trauma charts.
+ Coordinates Trauma and stroke PI process according to pre-determined criteria.
+ Organize required quarterly trauma/stroke meetings and maintain meeting minutes per required documentation to meet designation criteria.
+ Coordinate orientation, cross training, new equipment orientation, and skill development in relation to trauma and stroke care.
+ Develop and implement strategies for communication, education and feedback for EMS systems in the catchment area.
+ Direct community trauma/stroke education and prevention programs by developing, implementing and evaluating programs for targeted populations in the community related to injury prevention and other topics identified through needs assessment of the community.
+ Monitor physician and nurse compliance with the educational requirements of the trauma/stroke program.
+ In collaboration with care team manage registry data: collect, analyze and trend

Required Education and Experience
+ Licensure as Registered Nurse in Minnesota
+ Must have 3-5 years experience in the Acute Care and Emergency Department.
+ Minimum of 2-5 years experience in a previous leadership or supervisory position.
+ BLS, ACLS and one of ATLS/CALS/TNCC certification required.
Preferred Education and Experience
+ Baccalaureate degree preferred or must achieve within 3 years

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
40 hours per week, as scheduled by the DON, to support teams on various shifts, including days, nights, evenings, and weekends.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position is an active member of the MLHS leadership team, which will assume responsibilities of DON his/her absence. Will work closely with DON in alignment with the MLHS mission and vision to lead the Acute Care and Emergency Department. This includes but is not limited to activities such as hiring, training, evaluations, and discipline.
