    General Statement

    We seek director candidates with a research, professional, or design expertise that can also teach in the broad areas of upper level building design and technical or theoretical courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. The new director will have the opportunity to work with a world-class team to advance the vision and Land Grant mission of Montana State University.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    + Provide inspirational, respected, and engaging leadership that encourages faculty and staff to strive for excellence and innovation.

    + Coordinate with a collaborative leadership team of faculty, staff, administrators, and colleagues within and outside the School of Architecture.

    + Supervise the operational and fiscal management of the school with assistance from staff.

    + Actively guide faculty members through the tenure and promotion process and support their ongoing efforts to advance their scholarship and creative projects.

    + Recruit new faculty in keeping with school, college, and university strategic priorities.

    + Conduct annual reviews and assessment of current faculty, instructors, and staff.

    + Oversee the assessment of courses and programs according to the strategic plan, MSU program review requirements, and national accreditation standards.

    + Communicate professionally and articulately with staff, faculty, and administrative cohorts.

    + Lead the school with emphasis on collaboration, University mission fulfillment and a commitment to shared governance.

    + Represent the School’s needs and aspirations to university administrators, the School of Architecture Advisory Council, members of the profession, donors, and current and prospective students.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + Professional degree in architecture, a terminal degree in architecture or related field, and Professional Architectural Registration, or a Ph.D. in an area related to the position.

    + In exceptional circumstances, candidates who lack the degree requirements articulated above, but who are outstanding scholars of national or international repute with extraordinary management and leadership experience and demonstrated potential to carry out responsibilities relevant to the appointment, may be considered.

    + Demonstrated ability to lead a professional school of architecture with an emphasis on supporting students to degree completion

    + Demonstrated experience in teaching and academic administration appropriate to the position.

    + Demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and/or practice.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

    + Demonstrated engagement with contemporary issues in architecture, as an academic field and/or professional practice.

    + Demonstrated ability to effectively advocate for various constituencies within a large and complex organization.

    + Demonstrated ability to build relationships, to work collaboratively and to function in a collegial manner with faculty, staff, students, and administrators across the college and university.

    + Demonstrated ability to network with a range of individuals whose experiences with architecture are academic or, professional.

    The Successful Candidate Will

    + Work in residence to lead the daily and long-term collaborative decision-making processes of the school.

    + Demonstrate a commitment to consensus building between faculty, students, staff, and university administration.

    + Inspire and support the faculty to engage in innovative teaching, research, and community service programs and initiatives.

    + Engage effectively as a liaison with university administrators, the school’s Advisory Council, MSU Alumni and members of the profession.

    + Be enthusiastic in building relationships with potential donors.

    + Collaborate effectively and transparently as a part of leadership teams within and outside the school.

    + Demonstrate sound fiscal management of resources.

    + Engage in activities that maintain and develop Enhance the reputation of the School of Architecture regionally and, nationally, and promote recruitment and retention strategies to meet enrollment goals.

    + Promote and prioritize action items that will improve student persistence to degree completion.

    + Demonstrate the ability to engage with various groups and individuals of all backgrounds as they impact the profession and culture within the school, college, and university

    Consisting of 340 undergraduate and 60 graduate students, the School of Architecture offers a 5½ -year professional program leading to a Master of Architecture degree, fully accredited by NAAB . Located in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone ecological system and the Intermountain West region, the School of Architecture, College of Arts & Architecture and Montana State University are internationally recognized for research and creative activity drawn from the social, cultural, and environmental opportunities of the region.

     

    The school has enduring ties to the profession as evidenced by its Endowed Visiting Professorship, funded by the school’s Advisory Council. These visiting scholars enrich our curriculum and community—enhancing the school’s international reach and reputation. Graduates of our program stand out for their exceptional leadership, flexibility, and capacity to integrate the conceptual and theoretical into life-changing practices. The school maintains one of the longest running community design programs in the nation, providing unique service-learning opportunities for students to engage in real-world projects, in keeping with Montana State University’s land-grant mission.
