Job details: The NP/PA will provide consultative medical support to orthopedic and other surgical patients throughout the hospital. Responsibilities include performing initial consultation on high-risk post-operative patients in the orthopedic and spine services. Daily follow-up of these patients is required as determined by the patients’ medical status. Hospitalist NPs and PAs are expected to work closely with the orthopedic/surgical teams to coordinate patient care. This includes daily rounding, full assessment of medical conditions, reviewing accuracy of medications, management or perioperative medical conditions, daily documentation, and coordination of discharge with case manager and attending physician. The hospital is staffed, 24 hours a day, by a hospitalist physician who provides assistance and clinical supervision. Communication with patients’ PCPs is required when changes to patients’ medication profile are instituted and to arrange for follow-up of any post-operative complication. New England Baptist Hospital is a center of excellence for orthopedic surgery, and a large number of the post-operative orthopedic population has multiple co-morbidities. Therefore, a thorough and detail-oriented approach to patient care is essential, and a strong acute-care medical background is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Certification to practice as Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner
- A minimum of 2 to 4 years of acute care inpatient experience, preferably in the management of complex medical patients.
- Current DEA license Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS certification
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):
- Assists Orthopedic Surgeons in surgery:
+ Responsible for knowledge of and adherence to all policies and procedures of the NEBH Operating Room.
+ Participates in those surgeries assigned by the Orthopedic Service physicians, the chief PA and the Chief Resident.
- Coordinates and provides clinical support for the NEBH Orthopedic Surgeons:
+ Rounds on Orthopedic patients.
+ Performs Histories and Physicals, as needed.
+ Initiates appropriate laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and writes prescriptions within parameters of license.
+ Makes accurate identification of problems/diagnoses based on correct interpretation of findings.
+ Communicates with primary physician the plan of care being initiated or discontinued.
+ Assists patients in meeting health needs by identifying existing or potential problems, exploring available alternatives and providing support to the patient to make an informed decision regarding health care.
+ Acts as a liaison between Medical Staff and patients, and between Medical Staff and other allied health professionals.
+ Maintains current, accurate, medical record documentation including discharge summary page 1’s.
+ Participates in the Physician Assistant and orthopedic department Improvement initiatives, Education and Research Programs.
+ Assists with the development/expansion of protocols, clinical pathways and physician orders.
+ Works closely with Case Manager in identifying individual patient variances from established protocols throughout the course of care.
- Assists with the implementation of an inpatient pain management program:
+ Evaluates on a daily basis the effectiveness of the pain plan in meeting the patient’s needs with the pain management team.
- Responds to calls for orthopedic consultation from all areas, including nursing units, the Ambulatory Care, PACU and Bond Center.
- Education/Research:
+ Participates in the training and education of Physician Assistants and medical students.
+ Attends grand rounds in Orthopedics weekly.
+ Assists attending physicians with research and presentations as time allows.
+ Attends daily morning lectures in orthopedics as time permits.
+ Collaborates with interdisciplinary team for the development of educational materials for patients and allied health professionals.
+ Assists in the development of continuing education conferences for health professionals.
- Plans time away from work appropriately:
+ Arrives and leaves at appropriate times based on OR schedule and patient load on floors.
+ Uses unplanned earned time appropriately (Based on full time hours. Standards are pro-rated for part-time employees based on agreed hours).
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Participates in annual safety review.
QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Nurse Practitioner License, license and certified in the Commonwealth of MA
+ Basic Life Support certification required preferred by AHA/RC
+ Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification required preferred by AHA/RC
EDUCATION:
+ Master’s Degree required
+ Graduate of an accredited PA program or masters prepared in an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
+ 1-3 years of experience

Pay Range:
$64.19 - $87.29
The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
