Responsibilities For GS-04/05: Participates in inventories of wildlife and their habitats including water, winter ranges, upland game bird habitat, etc, following guidelines furnished. Participates in banding, tagging, and releasing wildlife in connection with wildlife studies. Participates in construction projects such as water developments, and fencing. For GS-06/07: Collects data in the field and performs inventories of wildlife data including but not limited to habitat, population, reproduction, food habits, mortality. Analyze findings and propose recommendations to management. Interprets aerial photos, landsat imagery, and topographic maps to determine land use and vegetation distribution; plots nest/herd breeding sites, and maps and photos. Determines likely impacts of and conducts compliance checks on minerals exploration, development, and operation, realty actions, recreational activities, forestry and range development or improvement projects on wildlife and their habitat. Provides information and prepare preliminary analysis of impacts on wildlife for inclusion in environmental documents. Evaluates impacts and assures conformation with mitigation measures; confers with offending party to resolve nonconformance situations. For GS-04/05/06/07: Enters and retrieves data from automated databases. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. For GS-04: You must possess six (6) months of general experience such as working in any professional, technical, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of wildlife in their natural habitat or techniques of collecting scientific data AND six (6) months of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Following specific instructions to check extensive data relating to the survey/study area; Collecting samples; or observing and recording specific information (i.e., vegetative cover, water quality samples, flora or fauna). -OR- 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation, if required. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. For GS-05: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Banding, tagging, and releasing wildlife; Inventorying rare and endangered species habitat based on guidelines. -OR- 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. For GS-06: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Surveying, mapping and documenting a variety of wildlife species and habitat conditions; Compiling occurrence and distribution data, cover maps, and herbarium study mounts; Assisting in performing wildlife studies and in constructing wildlife habitat improvement structures; And compiling data obtained through survey/study and assembling the data into a logical sequence for review. -OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education in an accredited educational institution (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) directly related to this position. Examples of directly related education are biology, botany, ecology, environmental science, or natural resource management. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. For GS-07: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Researching, compiling and tabulating a full range of wildlife inventory data; Leading or conducting field inventories of wildlife species to develop intensive scientific information; And collecting ecological site information for sensitive, threatened or endangered wildlife. -OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education in an accredited educational institution (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) directly related to this position. Examples of directly related education are biology, botany, ecology, environmental science, or natural resource management. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles. Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules. Education Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above) In addition to the experience requirements described in the Qualifications section of this announcement, experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Research activity or control program work. Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment. Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience. or Education and Training For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
