What Success Looks Like In This Job
The Special Education and Behavioral Services Coordinator plays a pivotal role in ensuring high-quality services for children and families enrolled in the Head Start program. This leadership position oversees the coordination, implementation, and monitoring of special education and behavioral support services, ensuring compliance with IDEA and Head Start Program Performance Standards. The supervisor collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, families, and external partners to ensure children with disabilities or developmental concerns receive individualized support that promotes their success and well-being.
Examples of Duties for Success
Program Oversight & Compliance
+ Ensure services align with IDEA regulations and Head Start Program Performance Standards.
+ Monitor and support the coordination of services for children with disabilities and social-emotional challenges.
+ Oversee the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
+ Maintain accurate, confidential documentation related to referrals, evaluations, service coordination, and child progress.
+ Coordinate case management for children receiving special education and/or mental health services, including referrals to LEAs and early intervention providers.
Staff Supervision & Support
+ Supervise contracted service providers to ensure consistent and effective service delivery.
+ Provide on-site coaching and consultation to education staff on strategies to support children requiring individualized classroom support.
+ Collaborate with teaching teams to design and model strategies for children with developmental delays, behavioral challenges, or other special needs.
+ Facilitate professional development related to special education practices, behavior management and individualized support strategies.
Family & Community Engagement
+ Serve as a liaison between the program, public schools, community agencies, and families to ensure collaborative communication and coordinated services for families with students on IEPs, behavior plans and/or other individualized support
+ Assist families in understanding the referral, evaluation, and IEP processes, including their rights and procedural safeguards.
+ Provide timely referrals and help families access community resources.
+ Communicate effectively with families through phone calls, written correspondence, meetings, and home visits when necessary.
Data & Reporting
+ Develop, prepare, and present timely and accurate reports to support planning, program evaluation, and regulatory compliance around special education and behavioral support
+ Research, collect, analyze, and interpret data to inform planning, performance monitoring, and assessment of community needs.
+ Support the collection and reporting of screening, evaluation, and service delivery data for children with identified or suspected needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Provides oversight and direction to contractors and vendors; no direct supervisory responsibilities for County staff.
More Qualifications for Success
Education
+ Bachelor’s degree required in Social Work, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Psychology, or a closely related field required.
Experience
+ Minimum of 3 years of experience in case management, child development, or special education services required.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education, Social Work, Mental Health, or a related field strongly preferred.
+ Three years of experience in program coordination, education services, or administrative support in early childhood or a related field preferred.
+ Experience working with children with disabilities, developmental delays, or behavioral needs strongly preferred.
+ Three years of experience coaching and mentoring education staff preferred.
+ Spanish bilingual skills highly preferred.
Additional Requirements
+ Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
+ Must successfully complete all required background checks, including fingerprinting.
+ Must pass a pre-employment physical and tuberculosis (TB) test.
