    Senior Plant Electrical Engineer (Engineer IV)

     

    The Operating Engineer Group at Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking to enhance the section's existing engineering expertise with a dedicated electrical engineer who possesses experience in all aspects of power generation, electrical systems, controls, design, installation, and maintenance.     This Senior Plant Electrical Engineer position is an engineering opportunity that will allow you to use your engineering education, experience and skills to manage large scale engineering projects and provide technical guidance to other engineers, operations, and maintenance personnel.

    Key Areas of Focus:

    + Prepare electrical engineering drawings, single-lines, calculations, studies, and schematics

    + Coordinate and perform inspections, tests, and participates in on-site audits of equipment

    + Design independently, manage, and complete large, complex engineering projects including developing budgets, estimating project costs, tracking changes, monitoring schedules, and conducting post project review

    + Facilitate meetings and works with customers and stakeholders

    + Serve as an electrical safety resource

    + Perform analysis and review of generator units and electrical equipment conditions

    + Develop forecasts and performs short- and long-range planning for projects; prepare feasibility studies, including project scope, preliminary designs, estimates, investment, and operation cost

    + Perform and manage NERC/WECC compliance and develops new procedures and programs based on new regulations

    + Prepare, maintain, and submit reports; perform technical review of engineering reports and documents from outside consultants

    + Perform root-cause analysis and investigations on failed equipment and systems

    + Prepare, administer, and review contracts and specifications to ensure compliance with engineering and materials standards

    + Evaluate and monitor outside consultants, contractors, and vendors to ensure compliance with specifications, bid proposals and obligations

    **Who You Are…** the ideal candidate will have a significant amount of demonstrated engineering experience and possesses theoretical knowledge of electrical systems including power generation, power distribution, relay protection, and electrical systems along with general engineering theories, techniques, and procedures. **A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university** **is required.** Additionally, an understanding of control systems, utility operating policies, procedures and processes and strong project management principles and practices will be needed. Finally, strong computer skills including electronic/online tools will be needed as you develop in this position. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.

    **What Does this Opportunity Offer…** This position will be primarily responsible for engineering responsibilities of fossil fuel, hydro-electric, combined cycle, bulk energy storage systems, water and wastewater treatment plants and hence experience in such is desirable in this position. You will have the opportunity to apply engineering principles while being responsible for the design and construction of power plant maintenance and capital improvement projects. You will become the subject matter expert for compliance with NERC generation related standards for the Colorado Springs Utilities generation fleet. As well, you will work along-side other plant engineers and mentor engineers with less experience.

     

    Additionally, this position will expose you to engineering as it is related to maintenance and troubleshooting activities performed by the electricians and design and implement electrical systems for capital improvement projects.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

    - Exerts up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a small amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those required for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a small amount, a job should be rated Light Work when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree or when it requires sitting most of the time, but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls and/or when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is small. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding work even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.
