Position Description
The Seasonal Environmental Health Technicians with the Sustainability, Healthy Homes & Environment division supports enforcement of the City’s Erosion and Sediment Control ordinance and applicable State and Federal statutes. On-the-job training is provided in techniques and procedures essential to conducting environmental health and safety inspections, investigations, and enforcement activities. This position will work under the direction of Environmental Inspectors that benefit the Minneapolis Health Department in the Environmental Services areas such as Soil Erosion, Water Quality, safe Storm Water maintenance and pollution control.
An ideal candidate will have good interpersonal communications skills and be able to work effectively with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds. A candidate will have the ability and desire to work collaboratively across the department and the community to build support for and foster a shared understanding of the critical importance of equity to achieve community health and well-being. Fluency in or familiarity with languages and cultures of people who speak Spanish, Somali, Hmong, Laotian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Oromo or Amharic is highly desirable. Additionally, candidate will have lived or professional experience with immigrant communities, communities of color and other marginalized communities.
Work Location
This position maybe eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
+ Assist Inspectors on field investigations for problems relevant to the assigned area which may include noise, air quality, water quality, soil pollution, soil erosion, and emergencies.
+ Assist inspectors with inspections and in developing and issuing written orders that address non-compliance with city ordinance.
+ Recommend permit denials, revocations, or administrative fines to the Supervisor or Inspectors.
+ Issue advisory letters, Order to Correct letters, and citations.
+ Assist in executing and managing environmental initiative work.
+ Assist in the work of/with stakeholders on area assigned issues, including businesses, and neighborhood groups; attend and make presentations at meetings, prepare letters and update website information.
+ Perform studies that analyze objective data regarding the area assigned and generate reports.
+ Create maps of the location of identified issues.
+ Represent the Health Department to the public and to outside organizations.

Required Qualifications
Minimum Education
High School diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Experience
No experience required. Prior experience working on projects relating to environmental health issues is desired.
License/certifications
Valid MN Driver's License and a clean driving record at time of hire.
Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.
Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Applicants who do not sign the informed consent form will not be further considered for the position.
Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement
The names of applicants who meet minimum qualification and who pass the screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for employment consideration. This list will be certified to the hiring manager who may use the list to fill a vacancy of the same job title. This eligible list will expire one (1) month after it has been established.
Interview Selection
The hiring authority reserves the right to determine the maximum number of candidates to interview from the established eligible list. If the hiring authority decides to interview other than by exam score order, they may select additional people to interview based on a candidate’s education or experience related to the field, work history, or skills uniquely related to the operational needs of the position.

+ Good interpersonal Communication skills, including written communication.
+ Ability to work effectively with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds.
+ Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new computer software.
+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
+ Desire to work in environmental, sustainability, energy, or construction-related field.
+ Ability to learn to interpret applicable codes, ordinances and regulations relevant to the specific work area
