The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, the Assistant Health Educator participates in the development, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of a wide variety of health education programs within the Department of Public Health; assists in the development of communication strategies and materials; conducts community assessments and prepares reports; and performs related duties a required.
NATURE OF POSITION: This position may require sustained physical effort involving continuous walking with some bending and stooping in conducting activities with occasional exposure to health and safety hazards and other unpleasant conditions. Also requires sustained time working at a computer workstation. May occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
The essential functions of a 2819 Assistant Health Educator include, but are not limited to:
+ Participates in the development, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs.
+ Assists in conducting statistical studies to assess program effectiveness.
+ Provides assistance in the development of communication strategies and materials, such as flyers, presentations, and social media.
+ Conducts community assessments including surveys, focus groups, and direct education with community members and community agency staff.
+ Conducts educational sessions with target groups on specific health subjects.
+ Provides referrals to treatment centers within the Department of Public Health.
+ Maintains close working relationships with stakeholders and funded community-based partners.
+ Plans, organizes, and conducts orientation programs for new employees.
+ Assists in setting up in-service training programs.
+ Arranges tours and talks for visitors and other persons interested in the department's functions and programs.
+ Confers with supervisor regarding assignments, problems, and progress.
+ Participates in team meetings.
+ Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Required):
EDUCATION: Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a major in public health, sociology, biological sciences, or a closely related field.
Substitution: Professional health educator work experience performing duties equivalent to those of City and County of San Francisco Class 2819 Assistant Health Educator (https://careers.sf.gov/classifications/?classCode=2819&setId=COMMN) may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

Selection Procedures:

Multiple-Choice Examination (Weight: 100%)
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a multiple-choice exam that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of public health education, programs, principles and practices; knowledge of community structure and public relations; ability and skill to assist in planning and developing health education programs; ability to prepare health education materials; ability to establish effective working relationships; and ability to communicate with groups and community agencies.
Candidates must achieve a passing score on the exam in order to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of the List Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
