    Duties and Responsibilities

    Position Summary:

    Loyola University Chicago School of Law is a student-focused law center dedicated to educating students to be responsible and compassionate lawyers and ethical advocates for justice and equity, and to contribute to a deeper understanding of law, legal institutions, and systems of oppression through a commitment to transformation, intersectionality, and anti-subordination in our teaching, research, scholarship, and public service. Students can expand their learning beyond the classroom through the Law School’s centers, institutes, and programs.

     

    The Assistant Director supports three specific areas focused on providing students with opportunities to apply their knowledge is real-world settings, specifically the Dan K. Webb Center for Advocacy (https://www.luc.edu/law/academics/centersinstitutesandprograms/dankwebbcenterforadvocacy/) , Center for Public Interest (https://www.luc.edu/law/academics/centersinstitutesandprograms/centerforpublicinterestlaw/) , and Pro Bono opportunities, providing comprehensive administrative and project management leadership and execution. This work is done under the direction of and in close collaboration with the Center leaders, and in partnership with faculty and staff within the Centers and across the Law School and the University. Some key partners include the Director of Dispute Resolution and Advocacy, Moot Court Program Director, Associate Director of Advocacy, and student-facing offices including the Offices of Student Services, Career Services, and the Registrar.

     

    All positions in the School of Law report to the Associate Dean for Administration. Additionally, the Assistant Director is accountable to the leaders of the Dan K. Webb Center for Advocacy and Center for Public Interest. Additionally, the Assistant Director backs up others within the Centers and across the School of Law, as needed.

    Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:

    + In collaboration with Center leaders, faculty and staff, provide administrative oversight of Center programming and events for students, alumni and other identified constituencies, including hosting competitions, CLE programs, conferences, lectures, and networking activities, and supporting programs such as the Advocacy Mentor Program.

    + Support LUC School of Law’s moot court, mock trial, and dispute resolutions teams in the areas of: trial advocacy; appellate advocacy; international arbitration; client counseling; negotiation; mediation; and transaction counseling. This includes collaboratively planning and managing tryouts for teams, supervising the student workers for the teams, providing fiscal management, and overseeing the planning, execution, and assessment of annual competitions and tournaments.

    + Consistent with University and School of Law policies, procedures, and best practices, support budget stewardship for the Centers and allocation of funds for competitions, programs and events. This includes preparing budgets for approval, and providing oversight and processing of payments (registration, travel, hotel, transportation) for student and faculty participation in regional, national, and international advocacy competition teams for the moot court, mock trial and dispute resolution programs.

    + Help to develop and execute comprehensive, integrated, marketing and communication plans for the Centers in conjunction with the respective Center leaders and Law School Communications. Oversee production of marketing materials related to Center initiatives, conferences and events.

    + Advise and inform students of curricular opportunities and identify additional opportunities for students to participate in advocacy, public interest, and pro bono related training, education and competitions.

    + Assist the public interest committee and leader for the Center for Public Interest in implementing the law school’s pro bono polo icy, engaging with alumni and Chicago community, and helping to implement public interest programming in collaboration with all stakeholders.

    + Assist the Director of Advocacy in the supervision of coaches and adjunct faculty in the Center through the development and implementation of policy, practices and procedure. Work collaboratively with Center Director, faculty and staff to evaluate advocacy courses, adjunct faculty, coaches and student needs.

    + Support the leaders of Center for Public Interest and Center for Advocacy with the development and cultivation of alumni relations to advance each Center’s mission, amplify their work, and enhance opportunities for students.

    + Serve on committees and represent the two centers at internal and external events, and perform other duties as assigned in support of the law school’s student experience and mission.

    + Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Centers, pro bono opportunities, and Law School.

     

    Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

     

    Juris Doctorate and 3-4 years of related experience with an excellent understanding of law curriculum including the administrative aspects of course planning at Loyola.

    + Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    + Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students, alumni, clients, and other employees of the organization.

    + Must be professional and confidential of all department data and correspondence.

    + Strong ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

    + Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively and efficiently with all employees, visitors, and students.

    Preferred qualifications

    + Experience in legal education, training programs, or collaboration with bar associations.

    + Familiarity with moot court and mock trial competitions.

    + Public interest and pro bono focused legal experience.
