    Summary This is a temporary position not to exceed 1039 hours. This is an excepted service appointment that does not confer competitive status. The typical season for this position is April through September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026. Responsibilities If selected, you will work as a Maintenance Worker Leader (Trails), WL-4749-07 at Denali National Park and Preserve. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Provides field direction and project execution for crews working on trails construction and maintenance projects. Directs 6-12 seasonal employees assigned to projects. Checks work while in progress. Directs volunteer groups assigned to projects. Utilizes maintenance computer program for reporting work accomplishments. Initiates safety awareness and training on a daily basis to ensure staff compliance. Implements National Park Service safety policies and procedures. Applies problem solving skills during trail construction. Performs and directs trail maintenance and construction activities. Please visit find a park for additional park information. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required and you must be able to obtain and maintain within 14 calendar days of appointment. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. You must obtain and maintain a certification to safely operate chainsaws. Training and certification will be provided on the job. You must obtain and maintain current certification in CPR and basic First Aid (minimum) to operate power saw equipment and chainsaws. Training and certification will be provided on the job. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 01/16/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required. Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties. -AND- To be eligible your resume must clearly show periods of time having lived or worked in or near the area of consideration. The area of consideration can be found in the below paragraph. Areas considered "near" Denali National Park and Preserve, Toklat, and Wonder Lake duty stations include only: Anderson, Cantwell, Chulitna, Clear, Curry, Denali Park, Ferry, Healy, Kantishna, Lake Minchumina, McKinley Village, Nenana, Nikolai, Petersville, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, and Trapper Creek. -ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position. Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies. Ability to perform the work of a Maintenance Worker Leader (Trails), WL-4749-07, and to lead others in the trades of carpentry, masonry, and painting. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Knowledge of technical practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Ability to use measuring instruments. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. Ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles for trail work. Knowledge of materials specific to trail maintenance and construction. Education There is no substitution of education for the required special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof as outlined in this announcement. Additional Information A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. Government housing may be available. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. Alaska currently does not have a state income tax. Selectee may be moved between duty stations within park boundaries. Physical Demands: The incumbent frequently experiences moderate to heavy exertion during the use and transportation of materials and equipment. Heavy exertion is required to shovel heavy snow, carry and roll rocks and logs, to move rocks and tree stumps of several tons utilizing rock bars and hoists. The incumbent frequently lifts and carries objects weighing 20 to 100 pounds. The incumbent hikes up and down steep mountainous terrain, traveling up top 12 miles daily. Work requires extensive walking, standing, bending, kneeling, twisting, pushing, pulling, and working in awkward positions on uneven terrain. The incumbent will be required to wear protective equipment, such as a respirator, hearing protection, clothing and eye protection, and must meet physical requirements to do so. Working Conditions: Work is performed outdoors approximately 80% of the time, in temperatures ranging from -40 degrees to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, often in periods of sunshine, rain, snow, sleet, or ice. Work requires travel on wet and slippery rocks, ice, snow, and at times crossing swift running water. The outdoor working environment provides considerable exposure to potential insect activity, bee stings, poisonous plants, encounters with bears, and extreme cold temperatures, etc. The leader uses power equipment which makes excessive noise, vibration, and exhaust fumes. Trail work is hazardous in nature while falling and buckling trees, lifting and moving rocks, logs, and snow, etc. The leader must maintain current certifications in CPR and basic First Aid (minimum to operate power saw equipment). The leader must maintain certifications to safely operate chainsaws. The leader may be required to work on some weekends and holidays as part of regular tour of duty, and should be available to emergency callout. This position may require the incumbent to camp in the backcountry or remote areas of the park for up to 5 nights, to complete trail projects.
