    Job Description

    Insight Global partners with a large local utility company and is looking for Journey or Senior Substation Civil Engineers. You will lead the engineering and design of complex substation projects, applying independent judgment and working with minimal supervision. You will be responsible for converting conceptual ideas into practical, functional designs that meet technical, safety, and regulatory standards. The role requires a strong emphasis on structural engineering, with significant involvement in site civil work, including access roads and environmental considerations. All deliverables must be PE signed and stamped.

    Key Responsibilities

    Provide technical expertise and perform engineering analyses, studies, and conceptual designs for substation projects, with an emphasis on structural components and site civil work.

     

    Prepare and present findings to internal teams, contractors, and vendors.

     

    Conduct site walkdowns and design review meetings, focusing on both structural and civil site elements.

     

    Develop technical documents, including design criteria, specifications, and reports, ensuring all are suitable for PE signature and stamping.

     

    Evaluate and recommend alternative project proposals, considering both structural and site civil requirements.

     

    Prepare and review contracts and proposals from engineering consultants for technical compliance.

     

    Interpret and apply relevant codes, standards, and regulations.

     

    Assist in root cause analysis and develop restoration plans.

     

    Approve reports, new drawings, and revisions to existing drawings, ensuring PE compliance.

     

    Respond promptly to facility failures during emergencies.

     

    Represent the company in interactions with government agencies as required.

    Skills and Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited U.S. or equivalent international program.

     

    Active California PE license required.

     

    Minimum of three years of cumulative engineering and design experience, with a focus on substation projects.

     

    Demonstrated experience in structural engineering, including design and analysis of bus supports, concrete or preform foundations, and other substation structures.

     

    Proven experience with site civil work such as grading, soil analysis, access road design, and addressing environmental constraints (“moving dirt”).

     

    Strong understanding that approximately 80% of the work will be structural-based, with the remainder involving geotechnical, grading, and drainage aspects.

     

    All engineering calculations and drawings must be prepared for PE signature and stamping.

     

    Ability to work independently with limited supervision to meet project commitments.

     

    Skilled in collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

     

    Proficient in interpreting and applying codes, standards, and regulations.

     

    Capable of managing multiple projects concurrently.

     

    Demonstrates sound judgment in decision-making and problem-solving.

     

    Provides thorough analysis and justification for recommendations.

     

    Takes ownership of issues and drives solutions.
