    About the role:

    The Associate Director, Strategic Regional Projects is responsible for leading the delivery of complex capital construction projects and providing portfolio-level management across an assigned group of projects within a pharmaceutical R&D client account. This role supports the Director in aligning project execution with capital investment strategy and the client’s broader business objectives.

     

    Based onsite at one of the client’s primary research hubs (Indianapolis, IN; Boston, MA; or San Diego, CA), the Associate Director supports projects across both East and West Coast locations. Periodic travel is required.

     

    The client’s R&D footprint is expanding through organic growth and mergers and acquisitions. This role may directly manage large, complex projects or serve in a project executive capacity overseeing a regional or program-specific project management team. The Associate Director is accountable for performance, financial stewardship, and risk management within their assigned portfolio.

     

    Projects are typically **high complexity, high risk, long-term (months to years)** capital initiatives with values generally exceeding **$5M** .

     

    Expected travel is approximately **25%** , with flexibility up to **40%** based on project and business needs.

    What you’ll do:

    Project & Delivery Leadership

    + Provide full lifecycle leadership for complex capital projects, including planning, design, construction, occupancy, and closeout.

    + Lead pre-project safety planning, risk assessments, budgeting, scheduling, procurement, quality assurance, and risk management activities.

    + Partner directly with clients to define project objectives and requirements; develop scopes of work, cost estimates, budgets, schedules, cash flow forecasts, and delivery plans.

    + Identify, procure, and manage architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants; lead RFP processes, bid evaluations, and vendor recommendations.

    + Lead multidisciplinary project teams, providing direction, accountability, and problem-solving to achieve project goals.

    + Implement and manage change control processes, including impact assessments, client approvals, and execution of change orders.

    + Proactively identify and mitigate complex project risks through contingency planning and corrective action strategies.

    Assigned Portfolio Management & Financial Stewardship

    + Manage an assigned portfolio of concurrent capital projects, ensuring alignment with approved funding, priorities, and risk tolerance.

    + Support capital planning, budgeting, and reforecasting activities for assigned projects in coordination with the Director.

    + Monitor portfolio-level financial performance within the assigned scope, including cash flow forecasting, variance analysis, and trend identification.

    + Balance project-level resource allocation, schedules, and delivery approaches to optimize performance within the assigned portfolio.

    Client Governance & Reporting

    + Develop and deliver regular portfolio and project reporting for assigned projects, including dashboards, financial summaries, risk registers, and decision support materials.

    + Participate in client governance forums, steering committees, and executive briefings related to assigned projects.

    + Serve as a senior point of contact for client stakeholders on assigned initiatives, escalating strategic issues as appropriate.

    + Implement project documentation governance and ensure data integrity aligned with client and company standards.

    Leadership, Standards & Continuous Improvement

    + Apply and reinforce established project delivery standards, governance frameworks, and best practices across assigned projects.

    + Provide leadership, mentorship, and performance oversight for project management staff supporting assigned projects.

    + Support continuous improvement initiatives and scaling of delivery models as the client’s portfolio evolves.

    + Foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and disciplined execution.

    + Assigned projects and sub-portfolios are delivered safely, predictably, and in alignment with approved funding and priorities.

    + Financial performance and risks are transparent, well-managed, and proactively communicated.

    + Portfolio Director receives reliable inputs to support overall portfolio strategy and governance.

    + Client stakeholders view this role as a trusted delivery and program partner.

    What you’ll need:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.

    • Previous experience leading large pharmaceutical R&D facility ground up or full recapitalization efforts.

    • Working knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry and biology research laboratories is preferred.

    • A basic understanding of cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) within the pharmaceutical sector is preferred.

    • Previous experience in a leadership role considered a plus, although not required.

    CERTIFICATES and/or LICENSES

    • PMP (US and/or Canada) and LEED AP preferred

    Turner & Townsend carefully considers multiple factors to determine compensation, including a candidate’s education, training, and experience. The minimum salary for this position is $190,000.00 annually and the maximum salary for this position is $200,000.00 annually. The compensation that is offered to a successful candidate will depend on the candidate’s skills, qualifications, and experience. Successful candidates will also be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on Turner & Townsend’s applicable benefit program. This role will provide the following benefits: 401(K), Dental insurance, Health insurance, Life insurance, and Vision insurance.
