About the Secretary of State:
The Office of the Secretary of State is one of five constitutional offices originally designated in Indiana's State Constitution of 1816. Sixty-one Hoosiers have served as the third-highest-ranking official in state government.
Historically, the duties of the office included the maintenance of state records and the preservation of the state seal, but as state government expanded, so did the responsibilities of the Secretary of State. Present duties include chartering of new business, regulation of the securities industry, oversight of state elections, commissioning of notaries public, and registration of trademarks and licensing of vehicle dealerships throughout Indiana.
Role Overview:
T he Senior Protection Advocate ("SPA") reviews Senior Savings Protection reports submitted pursuant to Ind. Code 23-19-4.1 The SPA assesses the report and determines appropriate actions to be taken by the Indiana Securities Division. The SPA serves as an advocate for senior citizens through the Securities Division investor protection efforts. The SPA is a public-facing position and assists with the Securities Division's outreach efforts and works in close cooperation with the Securities Commissioner.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $25.00 per hour.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
+ Senior Savings Protection - Review Senior Savings Protection Reports submitted by financial institutions pursuant to Ind. Code 23-19-4.1. Evaluate the reports and determine appropriate actions, which may result in request for Order restricting financial account, referral for investigation, communications with reporting agency, and/or outreach efforts.
+ Communications - Communicate with reporting firm to ensure all relevant information is obtained. SPA is responsible for referral of reports to internal and external investigators, agencies and other resources. SPA maintains materials on fraud prevention to provide to seniors, ensuring that the information is current and accurate.
+ Outreach Events - Serves as speaker on senior exploitation at outreach events as needed.
+ Reporting - Tracks reports on monthly basis and monitors reports to assess where outreach efforts should be focused. Provide monthly updates to the Securities Commissioner.
Education & Experience:
+ Baccalaureate Degree or 4-year equivalent.
+ 1-2 years of experience in educational outreach, communications, journalism, or related field.
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills (comfort with public speaking is a must).
+ Ability to organize and prioritize tasks in detail.
+ Prior experience with working with senior citizens.
+ Empathy, patience, and compassion when dealing with senior citizens is required.
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others.
+ Organizational skills and attention to detail to keep records thorough and manage reports effectively.
This position will be performed in an office environment.
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
