    Overview

     

    The Associate Heating Systems Technician is responsible for performing the maintenance, operation and commissioning of experimental heating and current drive systems. This position will primarily support the Neutral Beam Injection System in support of the National Spherical Torus eXperiment Upgrade (NSTX-U), however support of other experiments and heating systems is expected.

    Responsibilities

    Core Duties:

    Neutral Beam Ion Source Operation (50%)

     

    + Operate Neutral Beam Ion Source Power Supply local control center to monitor and adjust Neutral Beam Ion Source operating parameters with minimal supervision.

    + React to changing conditions and make adjustments as required or requested.

     

    Neutral Beam Power Supply & Control Systems Maintenance (40%)

     

    + Perform repair and maintenance of Neutral Beam Power Supplies, Ion Sources, and associated equipment. Involves work on low level electronics equipment, High Voltage Power Systems and electromechanical systems, electronics, and fiber optic telemetry.

    + Able to troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate electronics equipment.

    + Fabricate electronic equipment including but not limited to: assembly of printed circuit boards, fabrication and assembly of chassis’, field wiring of chassis, racks, and equipment.

    + Record and document system performance data in accordance with established PPPL procedures and guidelines.

     

    Training & Qualification (10%)

     

    + Maintain required job profile training such as: Hoisting and rigging, Confined space, Fall protection, Cyber security, GET (General Employee Training), EUT (Electric Utilization Training) and LOTO (Lock Out Tag Out).

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience:

    Required:

    + Candidates must have Electrical/Electronics Technology or AA degree with 3 to 5 experience as an Electrical Technician or HV/Pulsed-Power Technician; or no degree and 5+ years of experience as an Electrical Technician or HV/Pulsed-Power Technician.

    Preferred:

    + Experience with ≥1 kV systems, 480V 3-Phase, HV cabling and circuitry.

    + Experience with capacitor banks, pulsed-power systems, PFNs, or fast-switching devices.

    + R&D lab or prototype hardware development experience.

    + Basic machining or fabrication skills are a plus.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    + Working knowledge of high-voltage power systems, switchgear, transformers, breakers, and associated controls.

    + Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, circuit schematics, control wiring diagrams and technical manuals.

    + Proficiency in proper lockout/tagout and electrical safety protocols (OSHA, NFPA 70E).

    + Ability to effectively use electronic test equipment for troubleshooting such as oscilloscopes, signal generators and multimeters.

    + Ability to perform physical tasks such as climbing, squatting, kneeling, and lifting as required for accessing and working on electrical equipment.

    + Effective communication skills (verbal and written); able to coordinate across departments.

    + Strong attention to detail and adherence to standardized procedures.

    + Ability to function with continuous interruptions.

    Physical Requirements:

    + Full or fully corrected vision, correct depth and color perception, occasional close work, work in low light conditions.

    + Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

    + Full hand, arm and leg mechanical dexterity and coordination.

    + Ability to work near static magnetic fields without medical restrictions.

    + Capable of climbing ladders, continuous walking, standing or sitting.

    + Will work in environments with industrial hazards such as potential oxygen deficiency, high noise, confined spaces, elevations, radiation, and where electrically/mechanically energized equipment may be present.

    + Routinely wear protective clothing and equipment, primarily hardhats, safety glasses, and electrical PPE.

    Working Conditions:

    + This position works in an industrial environment; on-site position, typical hours are 7 AM to 3:30 PM Monday - Friday. May be asked to work additional hours into 2nd shift or weekends depending on need or for emergencies.

    + Operation of the local control center and other controls may be for extended or irregular periods of time. Full mental concentration is required for the entire duration of the operator’s shift.

    + On-call duties requiring occasional off-hours response to emergency or alarm conditions.

    + May involve work in confined spaces, use of fall protection, other job-specific PPE.

    + We are not supporting a visa or relocation for this position.
