The Center on Technology Policy at NYU is seeking a part-time Associate Research Scientist to lead our Online Expression and Online Safety research program. The position will conduct research and policy analysis on topics including age assurance, section 230 reform, U.S. state expression and child safety regulation, and social media design regulation--among others that concern the balance between protecting online expression rights and ensuring a safe and positive experience for users.
The Associate Research Scientist will produce both long and short-form writing on these topics. This includes both Center on Technology Policy-published white papers or blog posts, and articles for other outlets. The Associate Research Scientist will also organize virtual and/or in-person events and engage with the wider policy community. This includes fielding questions from policymakers, journalists, and other civil society members.
Under the direction of the CTP Director, this role is responsible for:
+ Leading policy research and policy analysis projects at the intersection of online safety and online expression.
+ Organizing, hosting, and/or participating in virtual and in-person events.
+ Contributing to CTP media and communication efforts.
+ Engaging regularly with policymakers and policy professionals.
+ Advising and interfacing with NYU students regarding tech policy.
+ Managing student research assistants.
+ Providing strategic direction to CTP.
The strongest applicants will either come from a legal or academic background, have demonstrable technology policy research experience, and an understanding of current topics and debates in technology policy.

CTP is a practitioner-oriented tech policy think tank at NYU. We work across three main areas: state technology policy, online expression and online safety, and infrastructure and hardware. We work closely with the Center on Social Media and Politics at NYU and other partners across academia and civil society.

This is a part-time position.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the base hourly range for this position is $50/hr - $60/hr. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer .
Required education: Master’s degree, JD, PhD or equivalent in policy, communication, political science, or related field.
Required skills and experience:
+ At least 3 years research experience in law, social sciences, public policy, or a related field (time in MA or PhD program counts).
+ Experience completing policy research.
+ Experience working closely with policymakers, civil society activists, or journalists.
+ Excellent project management skills.
+ Deep understanding of current topics and debates in technology policy.
+ Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
+ Ability to organize and oversee complex projects with multiple moving parts.
+ Strong interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
