Summary/Objective:
The Assistant Superintendent supports the day-to-day field operations of commercial construction projects while continuing to develop technical and leadership skills. This role demonstrates a solid understanding of common construction practices, strong attention to cost control and schedule adherence, and the ability to complete assigned administrative tasks with minimal supervision. The Assistant Superintendent divides time between hands-on field work and learning the fundamentals of managing commercial construction projects, with a focus on safety, quality, and team coordination.
Essential Functions:
1. Perform skilled construction work across multiple trades as needed to support daily field operations and project progress.
2. Assist with daily planning and coordination of subcontractor activities to support workflow, site logistics, and schedule milestones.
3. Support the Superintendent with short-interval planning (look-ahead planning, task sequencing, and crew coordination).
4. Assist with the coordination of material deliveries and staging to prevent delays or congestion.
5. Support jobsite safety compliance by monitoring subcontractor adherence to OSHA requirements and Speedwell Safety Standards, promoting safe work practices, correcting hazards when identified, and promptly reporting safety concerns to the Superintendent or Project Manager.
6. Maintain a clean, safe, and organized jobsite, including the construction office, storage areas, and work zones.
7. Assist in maintaining quality standards by monitoring workmanship across all phases of construction and supporting compliance with project drawings and specifications under the direction of the Superintendent or Project Manager.
8. Participate in plan and specification reviews before and throughout the project to help identify scope requirements, coordination needs, and information necessary to support on-time project completion.
9. Help verify that required permits, inspections, and approvals are in place before work begins.
10. Assist the Superintendent with owner, architect, and inspector interactions during site visits, inspections, and meetings.
11. Support maintaining a professional and organized site presentation for all visitors.
12. Support punch list creation, tracking, and closeout activities.
13. Properly use, care for, and maintain company tools, equipment, and materials assigned to the individual or crew.
14. Represent Speedwell Construction professionally by maintaining positive, respectful, and effective working relationships with subcontractors, clients, coworkers, and the public.
15. Participate in ongoing training related to safety, quality, and construction best practices.
16. Demonstrate continuous development of leadership, communication, and technical skills in preparation for increased responsibility.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Assistant Superintendent develops the skills necessary to support daily jobsite operations and assist with managing field personnel. This role includes intermittent supervisory responsibilities, depending on project needs, and may involve coaching or serving as a resource to other employees and team members.
Work Environment:
This position is based primarily on active indoor and outdoor construction jobsites. The employee will regularly be exposed to varying weather conditions, elevated noise levels, airborne dust and particles, and operating construction equipment. The use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety requirements are mandatory. Speedwell Construction, Inc. provides required safety training, education, and PPE.
Physical Demands:
The Assistant Superintendent must be able to access and navigate all areas of the jobsite. Physical requirements include the ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, crawl, kneel, stoop, crouch, reach, grasp, pull, and operate a motor vehicle. The role requires standing and walking for extended periods, traversing uneven terrain, and safely lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, with an expected workload of approximately 40–45 hours per week. Additional hours, including evenings, nights, or weekends, may be required based on project demands.
Travel:
Regular travel to assigned jobsites is required. Occasional travel may be necessary for training, education, or company-related meetings.
Required Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• OSHA10 Construction certification
• Basic ability to read and interpret construction drawings
• Entry-level experience in commercial or residential construction
• Basic working knowledge of information technology systems
Preferred Education and Experience:
• Experience with multi-story construction, including post-tension concrete
• CPR/First Aid certification
• Experience working across multiple construction trades
Work Authorization/Clearances:
The candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening, background check, Motor Vehicle Record review, and possess a valid driver's license.
