At Baystate Health, our Sterile Processing team plays a critical role in supporting safe, high-quality patient care across our hospitals. As a **Sterile Processing Technician** , you will be an essential partner to our surgical and clinical teams by ensuring instruments and equipment are properly cleaned, assembled, sterilized, and ready for use.
We are seeking **experienced candidates with at least one year of hospital-based sterile processing experience** who are committed to excellence, teamwork, and continuous learning.
Position Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and Baystate Health policies.
This role requires strong attention to detail, knowledge of infection prevention practices, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Technicians utilize both automated and manual processes and operate a variety of sterilization technologies, including steam, ethylene oxide, and low-temperature gas plasma systems.
Key Responsibilities
+ Apply infection prevention and safety principles throughout all sterile processing activities
+ Perform decontamination of reusable instruments using appropriate cleaning methods
+ Operate and maintain washers, ultrasonic equipment, and sterilizers per established guidelines
+ Conduct and document daily quality assurance testing (TOSI, SonoCheck, biological and chemical indicators)
+ Inspect, assemble, package, wrap, and sterilize surgical instrument trays and devices with accuracy
+ Assemble an average of 4–6 instrument trays per hour while maintaining quality standards
+ Load and unload sterilizers and ensure sterile integrity prior to release
+ Accurately scan instruments, trays, and supplies into the tracking system
+ Prepare surgical case carts using first-in/first-out inventory rotation
+ Inspect sterile items for packaging integrity and expiration dates
+ Maintain clean, organized work areas to support safe and efficient workflows
+ Collaborate effectively with peers, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals
Qualifications
Required:
+ Minimum of **one (1) year of hospital-based sterile processing experience**
+ Ability to read, write, and comprehend English
+ Ability to follow detailed instructions and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
+ Strong commitment to teamwork, quality, and patient safety
Preferred:
+ Experience in an acute care or perioperative hospital setting
Certification:
+ CBSPD and/or HSPA certification required within 18 months of hire
Training & Work Environment
+ Comprehensive orientation (8–12 weeks)
+ Web-based training and required hand hygiene education
+ Ability to work in all sterile processing areas, including decontamination, prep & packaging, and sterilization
