About the role:
The Associate Director of Project Engineering is responsible for the development, governance, and execution of the organization’s in-house commissioning (Cx) program and construction quality/risk function across a complex capital project portfolio. This role provides strategic program leadership, technical oversight, and people management to ensure projects are delivered safely, compliantly, and to engineering and operational standards.
The position leads a blended organization of managers, senior technical leaders, and quality/risk professionals and serves as a key partner to Project Management, Engineering, Operations, and external consultants.
This position is on-site at our client’s campus in downtown Indianapolis a few days a week.
What you’ll do:
Commissioning Program Ownership
+ Develop, implement, and continuously improve the in-house commissioning program, including:
+ Standards, procedures, templates, and tools
+ Execution models for varying project size and complexity
+ Integration with project delivery, turnover, and operational readiness
+ Establish clear expectations for when commissioning is executed internally versus via external consultants.
+ Serve as the technical authority for commissioning strategy, scope definition, and execution quality.
Construction Quality & Risk Management
+ Lead the construction quality and risk management function to ensure:
+ Ensure client engineering specifications, best practices, standards, safety standards, etc. are incorporated into the project during the design phase.
+ Installation aligns with approved architectural & engineering drawings and specifications.
+ Safety and quality standards are consistently applied in the field
+ Construction risks are identified early and mitigated proactively
+ Partner with Project Management and Engineering to resolve constructability, quality, and compliance issues.
+ Drive lessons learned, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives across the portfolio.
Project Execution & Technical Oversight
+ Provide senior-level oversight and guidance for commissioning and quality activities across assigned projects.
+ Support:
+ Development of commissioning scopes of work
+ RFPs and consultant selection
+ Review of commissioning plans, schedules, and deliverables
+ Act as an escalation point for high-risk, high-visibility, or technically complex projects.
+ Ensure commissioning and quality activities are fully integrated into overall project execution plans.
People Leadership & Organizational Development
+ Lead, coach, and develop a multi-layered technical organization, including managers and senior technical staff.
+ Establish role clarity, performance expectations, and development pathways for project engineering and quality/risk roles.
+ Balance strategic leadership with hands-on technical engagement where required.
+ Build a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and proactive risk management.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
+ Serve as a trusted technical advisor to internal stakeholders and clients.
+ Communicate program performance, execution status, and risk posture to senior leadership.
+ Partner cross-functionally with:
+ Project Management
+ Engineering & Design Teams
+ Facilities & Operations
+ Safety & Quality
+ Procurement and external partners
What you’ll need:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or related discipline)
+ Previous experience in project engineering, commissioning, construction quality, or capital project delivery
+ Demonstrated experience executing and overseeing commissioning in regulated or complex environments
+ Proven people leadership experience, including managing managers and senior technical professionals preferred.
+ Strong working knowledge of:
+ Commissioning methodologies
+ Engineering specifications and drawings
+ Construction quality assurance
+ Safety and risk management
Preferred
+ Experience developing or scaling an internal commissioning or project engineering program
+ Experience managing third-party commissioning agents and consultants
+ Life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotech, or similarly regulated project experience
+ Professional Engineer (PE), commissioning certifications, or similar credentials
