We are seeking an entry-level Electrical Engineer for the Transmission Protection & Control Department. This position focuses on designing and applying Substation Integration and Automation (SIA) systems for transmission and distribution substations. The role involves providing application and configuration files for SCADA, remote engineering access, and transferring necessary information from substations for capital improvement projects, with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, schedule, and cost efficiency. The engineer will also tackle technical problems, offering solutions for transmission operations.
Responsibilities
+ Create configuration files that adhere to standard protocols.
+ Provide detailed configuration files and engineering field support for construction and commissioning personnel.
+ Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
+ Develop effective plans, establish goals, and monitor progress toward task completion.
+ Possess knowledge and technical understanding of the operational purpose and application of substation equipment.
+ Understand and analyze digital communication circuits.
+ Support storm restoration efforts.
+ Assist operations and construction functions to ensure a reliable, safe, and secure power system.
+ Develop SIA schemes that enhance the efficiency and dependability of the power system.
+ Handle multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and use effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor's degree in Engineering with an emphasis in Electrical Engineering.
+ Understanding of Electrical Power System Theory.
+ Knowledge of substation equipment and digital communications, including DNP, SES92, SELFM.
+ Proficiency in SCADA, PLC, and Power Relaying.
+ Strong computer skills, time management, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Knowledge of CAD is preferred.
+ Relevant coursework in Power System Analysis, Protective Relaying, Control Systems, and Digital Electronics.
+ Previous work experience demonstrating a strong work ethic, not necessarily engineering-related.
Work Environment
This position is based in Birmingham, Alabama, adjacent to the APCO building. Most SIA work occurs in an office environment, but some travel for site visits, meetings, conferences, and training is required.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, AL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $30.00/hr.
