About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

The Indiana Office of Energy Development (OED) was established to shepherd the state’s energy plan. OED focuses on the development and implementation of comprehensive energy planning for the state that utilizes all of Indiana’s energy resources and supports a strong, dynamic, and growing economy. OED strives to be a national leader in the creation of innovative policy solutions and programs for affordable, reliable energy.
Role Overview:
The Indiana Office of Energy Development is seeking a Communications and Special Projects Intern to join our Office in summer 2026. The intern will support a variety of initiatives and projects including, but not limited to, creating and editing content for social media platforms, generating infographics and flyers for agency projects, including digital content, drafting communication for OED initiatives, editing and updating the agency web site, assisting with OED events and meetings, developing innovative plans for stakeholder outreach, developing, updating and organizing relevant agency communication databases and documents, including brand materials and photo library, and conducting research applicable to effective public relations and marketing strategies.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, have proficiency with social media platforms and basic knowledge of graphic design software, be a self-starter and possess an innovative mindset with an eagerness to work alongside and collaborate with a team.
Hourly Rate:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
A Day in the Life:
As a Communications and Special Projects Intern for the Indiana Office of Energy Development, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience with:
+ Drafting and editing content for social media platforms;
+ Collaborating with OED team members, with the objective of developing, organizing and creating content and innovative communication strategies and tactics for Office:
+ Utilizing applicable technology on a regular basis to assist with OED projects.
+ Creating flyers and infographics for OED initiatives;
+ Supporting team members by crafting talking points and agency presentations;
+ Assisting with meetings and special events, such as webinars, energy tours, etc.
+ Answering public inquiries related to agency issues and policies.
What You'll Need for Success:
+ Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
+ Academic work in related field
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills
+ Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
+ Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
+ Ability to conduct well-informed research
+ Ability to solve complex, critical problems
+ Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality
+ Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
