    JOB TITLE: Manager, Gallery Teaching

     

    DEPARTMENT: Education Programs

     

    REPORTS TO: Director, Education Programs

     

    CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Exempt

     

    REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Partial Remote

    GENERAL SUMMARY

    Under the guidance of the Director, Education Programs, the Manager, Gallery Teaching will provide the vision and resources for the teaching team when working with students and teachers and provide professional development to adult learners in the DIA galleries and out in the community.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + Recruit, mentor, develop and successfully manage a team to achieve the strategic objectives and the present and future needs of the department in alignment with the museum’s annual priorities and strategic vision.

    + Create a collaborative work environment by using a performance support process including goal setting, feedback, and development.

    + Lead training, workshops, and professional development programs in Visual Thinking Strategies, (VTS)and other pedagogical approaches that support engagement with the collection for diverse audiences.

    + Develop non-school programs using Visual Thinking Strategies and other pedagogical approaches. Facilitate programs and train other facilitators.

    + Facilitate workshops and professional development opportunities for educators, teachers, and administrators, to demonstrate how the DIA can be a resource to support their classroom teaching.

    + Nurture school partnerships through ongoing implementation and support.

    + Develop and support guided experiences and engagement activities for Pre-K–12 student groups, including new galleries, new objects/loans, and new subjects.

    + Research and develop training materials for permanent collection and loan objects, as appropriate.

    + Develop tour schedules and provide on-going training and support

    + Must be able to step in and lead learning experiences with Pre-K–12 students

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor’s degree in art history, education, or related field required. Three (3) years of experience in education or museum education. Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role is required. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.

    + Understanding and demonstrated ability in constructivist teaching, Visual Thinking Strategies, and developmental learning pedagogy.

    + Knowledge of principles, practices, and application of learning theories for learners of all ages.

    + Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to changes in priorities based on operational need.

    + Demonstrated organizational skills to plan, manage, prioritize, and complete multiple on-going projects to meet deadlines and goals.

    + Demonstrated research and analysis skills to identify critical information and complete projects and goals.

    + Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, including presenting or sharing information in a clear, effective, and engaging manner suited to the audience.

    + Must have demonstrated active listening and communication and presentation skills and an ability to communicate and provide instruction clearly to diverse individuals of all ages.

    + Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution, and recommend appropriate course of action.

    + Ability to calmly and professionally deescalate and resolve challenging situations with team members and visitors.

    + Ability to work with distractions

    + Ability to negotiate complex challenges from schools including teacher expectations and differing personalities and priorities on the team

    + Detail-oriented when working with time sheets, expense reports and schedules

    + Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events if needed.

    + Must be proficient in latest version of Office 365.

    + Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.

    + Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive, and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

    Ability to independently navigate the museum. Occasional noise and variable temperatures. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and exchange accurate information using various methods including in-person, telephone and email.
