    Description

    Position Summary

    The Facilities Operations & Maintenance Supervisor – 2nd Shift is responsible for supervising evening shift operations and maintenance activities supporting the critical healthcare infrastructure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. This position ensures safe, reliable, and compliant operation of facility systems during the 2nd shift, with an emphasis on responsiveness to urgent and emergency maintenance issues that directly impact patient care and hospital operations.

     

    The Supervisor plays a critical role in maintaining continuity of operations in a 24/7, mission-critical military medical environment and serves as the primary facilities leadership presence during the evening shift.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Supervision & Leadership

    + Supervise multi-trade maintenance personnel (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, utility, general maintenance, etc.) assigned to 2nd shift within a union/CBA environment

    + Assign, prioritize, and oversee Preventive Maintenance (PM), Corrective Maintenance (CM), and emergency work during evening operations

    + Ensure adequate staffing, coverage, and readiness for emergency response during the 2nd shift

    + Serve as the escalation point for operational issues during the shift

    + Document performance issues and coordinate discipline, coaching, and corrective actions with management and HR

    + Ensure effective handoff communication to 3rd shift and day shift leadership

    Operations & Maintenance

    + Oversee evening maintenance activities for critical building systems, including:

    + HVAC, room pressurization, and environmental controls

    + Electrical distribution and emergency power systems

    + Medical gas and vacuum systems

    + Plumbing, steam, chilled water, and utility systems

    + Life safety systems (fire alarm, fire suppression, egress)

    + Respond to urgent and emergency service calls occurring after normal business hours

    + Ensure work orders are properly documented, updated, and closed in CMMS (DMLSS or equivalent)

    + Verify quality, safety, and compliance of all work performed on the shift

    Compliance & Regulatory

    + Maintain compliance with:

    + Joint Commission (TJC) standards

    + NFPA Life Safety Code

    + DHA, DoD, and Army regulations

    + OSHA and environmental safety standards

    + Address deficiencies identified during evening operations and report unresolved issues to leadership

    + Support inspections, audits, and tracers as required

    Coordination & Communication

    + Act as the primary facilities point of contact for clinical departments and command staff during the 2nd shift

    + Coordinate outages, shutdowns, and high-risk work scheduled during evening hours

    + Communicate critical issues, system failures, and follow-up needs to oncoming shifts and management

    + Work closely with the call center to ensure timely dispatch and resolution of work requests

    Safety & Risk Management

    + Enforce safety programs including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, and Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA)

    + Ensure proper PPE usage and adherence to safety protocols

    + Investigate incidents, near misses, and equipment failures occurring on the shift

    Administrative & Reporting

    + Track labor hours, overtime usage, and attendance for 2nd shift personnel

    + Review work order backlog and ensure priority issues are addressed

    + Assist with small projects, service orders, and contractor coordination during evening hours

    + Maintain accurate logs, reports, and shift turnover documentation

    Required Qualifications

    Education & Experience

    + High school diploma or GED required

    + Minimum **5–7 years** of facilities operations and maintenance experience in a healthcare, military, or mission-critical environment

    + Minimum **2–3 years** of supervisory or lead experience

    Technical Knowledge

    + Strong working knowledge of hospital building systems

    + Understanding of Joint Commission and NFPA compliance requirements

    + Experience with CMMS platforms (DMLSS preferred)

    + Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Microsoft Lists

    Skills & Abilities

    + Strong leadership and decision-making skills during off-hours operations

    + Ability to manage emergencies and prioritize work independently

    + Excellent communication skills, especially shift-to-shift turnover

    + Ability to interpret technical drawings, SOPs, and regulatory requirements

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Trade license or journeyman certification (HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, etc.)

    + Experience supervising in a union/CBA environment

    + Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) certification or progress toward certification

    + Prior experience supporting WRNMMC or federal healthcare facilities

    Physical & Work Requirements

    + Ability to walk extensive hospital grounds and mechanical spaces

    + Ability to climb ladders and access confined or elevated areas

    + Ability to respond to emergencies outside scheduled hours as required

    Work Environment

    + Mission-critical military healthcare setting

    + Requires adherence to security protocols and background clearance

    + Frequent exposure to mechanical rooms, rooftops, and clinical areas
