Patient Care Technician (PCT)
Unit: Peri Anesthesia
Status: casual
Shift: typically daylight - 1 shift min per week
+ Provide direct patient care, including assistance with procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs), under the direction of the RN
+ Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies; report changes in patient condition to the RN
+ Perform UPMC Nursing Assistant core responsibilities, including vital signs, blood glucose testing, weights, intake and output, specimen collection, Foley care, telemetry monitor application, and patient safety indicators
+ Competently perform ADLs such as bathing, feeding, ambulating, toileting, transporting, turning, and repositioning patients
+ Perform additional unit-based tasks, including at least four of the following:
+ Phlebotomy
+ 12-lead EKG
+ Simple dressing changes
+ Foley catheter removal
+ Straight catheterization
+ Bladder scan
+ Point-of-care testing
+ IV catheter removal
+ Achieve and maintain competency in advanced skills based on departmental need, which may include phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKGs, and NG tube clamping and removal
+ Document care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record; access to medications is limited to delivery to the RN
+ Support unit operations by responding to call lights and phones, passing meal trays, transporting patients, and completing clerical tasks as needed
+ Provide patient and family education under RN direction; apply, monitor, and remove restraints per hospital or physician protocol
+ Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, families, and the healthcare team while demonstrating respect for cultural diversity and maintaining a safe work environment
+ Report equipment malfunctions promptly and adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and safety standards, including standard precautions
+ Actively participate in quality initiatives, departmental projects, and continuous learning; seek feedback, identify learning needs, and request assistance with prioritization as needed
+ High school diploma or GED required
+ Must meet one of the following experience or education requirements:
+ One (1) year of general healthcare experience OR
+ Six (6) months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion for those with less than one year of experience OR
+ Enrollment in a Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Physician Assistant (PA), or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation OR
+ Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences-related field
+ Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician (PCT) class
+ Successful completion of eRecord training
+ Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program, preferred
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
+ CPR certification required based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components, within 30 days of hire
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR required
+ Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred
