About LASMNY
The Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc. (LASMNY) is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer. Our staff provides services in thirteen counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and Otsego. In addition, our Agricultural Worker Project (AWP) provides services to agricultural workers throughout New York State.

LASMNY’s mission is to provide free legal assistance to low-income individuals facing civil legal issues that impact basic needs such as housing, safety, income, and healthcare. Job Summary
The Staff Attorney in the Victims Assistance Project will provide direct and comprehensive legal services to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Services will include advice, negotiation, and litigation in family law and matrimonial matters. The attorney will also offer holistic representation in related civil legal issues stemming from abuse or violence, such as housing, public benefits, disability, employment, consumer, education, health, and elder law.
The attorney will engage in outreach and education efforts with community members, advocates, and service providers to promote awareness and access to legal services.
Essential Job Duties
+ Provide trauma-informed legal advice and representation to survivors in family and matrimonial law matters.
+ Represent clients in court proceedings including custody, visitation, orders of protection, divorce, and support.
+ Address ancillary civil legal issues including housing, benefits, employment, and healthcare access.
+ Conduct legal research and draft pleadings, motions, memoranda, and advocacy letters.
+ Maintain accurate and timely case records in compliance with LASMNY and grant requirements.
+ Participate in community outreach, education, and training efforts.
+ Collaborate with service providers and advocates to ensure coordinated support for survivors.
+ Demonstrate a strong commitment to LASMNY’s mission.

+ Communicate effectively and courteously with clients, attorneys, court personnel, and community partners.
+ Maintain regular and predictable attendance in accordance with organizational policies.
+ Adapt to new technologies and systems, including legal research tools and case management software.
+ Comply with all Legal Services Corporation regulations, LASMNY policies and procedures, and grant-based reporting requirements.
+ Perform additional responsibilities and duties as assigned by a supervisor based on department needs.
Required Qualifications
+ Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with zero to five years of experience.
+ Admission to practice law in New York State. Law school graduates registered for the New York State Bar Exam, or eligible for admission on motion, are encouraged to apply.
+ Strong litigation, negotiation, and legal writing skills.
+ Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and serving low-income communities.
+ Ability to manage a high-volume caseload with efficiency and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Experience in family law, domestic violence advocacy, or trauma-informed legal practice.
+ Familiarity with civil legal issues affecting survivors.
+ Bilingual or multilingual capabilities.
Compensation and Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary, starting at $84,240.00 for law graduates with no experience and up to $96,294.00 for licensed attorneys with five years of experience.
