Description
Department of Public Works is currently seeking a Utility Maintenance Mechanic III within the Division of Environmental Storm Water Management. This position will lead a team that inspects and maintains all mechanical and electrical mission-critical storm water machinery and equipment such as, but not limited to, pumping stations, portable pumps, emergency generators, flood gates, outfall valves, and tide gauges. This highly sophisticated equipment is essential to protect Norfolk’s infrastructure and assets.
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s Street Network, Traffic Management System, Storm Water System, Waste Management, and Recycling.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $51,099.42
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
+ Performs preventative and emergency inspections and maintenance for all mechanical and electrical storm water machinery and equipment such as pumping stations, portable pumps, aerators, emergency generators, flood gates, outfall valves, and tide gauges.
+ Inspect large meter equipment, valves and boxes for wear, leaks, and damage. Change belts, oil filters, electrical and electronic gauges, and switches. Cleans, rebuilds, and replaces worn or broken parts.
+ Performs troubleshooting functions by determining and solving reasons for breakdowns or leaks, responding to fault indicators, and determining causes or reasons of mechanical, electrical, or electronic malfunctions.
+ Maintains electronic and written records and reports by accurately documenting work performed, lists, meter removal, repairs, and maintenance and installation logs.
+ Resolves issues by investigating complaints, inspecting necessary materials and equipment, scheduling and prioritizing work, and documenting progress and productivity.
+ Functions as a lead worker for the pump station crew by overseeing work quality, training, instructing, and scheduling work of junior employees.
+ Manages projects by investigating complaints, working with engineers and contractors to determine the best method to resolve problems, documenting repairs, writing work orders, supervising, and documenting deliveries of materials, heavy equipment and safety barriers, and monitoring work.
+ Assists with new installations of electrical and mechanical equipment machinery by installing new machines.
+ Managing inventory and procuring supplies and materials from vendors while following purchasing guidelines.
+ Assists with hiring staff.
+ Responds to emergencies by leading damage recovery teams.
+ Computer experience and knowledge required. Knowledge of work management database systems and Microsoft suite a plus. Knowledge with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system a plus.
+ Must be able to read and interpret pipe plans and schematics, manuals, reports, diagrams, blueprints, and general correspondence.
+ Requires ability to clearly understand verbal or written instructions.
+ Requires the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
+ Requires physical ability to stoop, bend, lift-up to 50 pounds.
+ Employee must not have phobias of water, heights, or confined spaces.
+ Requires normal hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception to safely work around electrical and mechanical equipment.
+ Requires ability to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, sometimes under emergency conditions.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Five years' experience as an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic or Electrician.
Additional Information & Requirements
+ Must possess a valid Driver’s License. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview.
+ Preferred candidate will possess valid Commercial Driver’s License.
+ Preferred candidate will obtain a back-flow preventer certification and an applicator license for pesticide within 1 year of employment.
Work Hours: Monday – Friday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm; 40 hours per week every week; This position will be required to work a mandatory rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hour emergencies.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
