About the Internship
The Office of the Secretary (OSEC) Internship at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting the governance and executive functions of one of the nation’s largest and most complex transportation agencies. The Office of the Secretary plays a critical role in supporting the Board of Commissioners, ensuring effective decision-making, transparency, and coordination across the agency. Interns will work closely with a collaborative, fast-paced team and contribute to meaningful projects that directly support Board operations, process improvement initiatives, and agencywide planning efforts. This internship provides exposure to executive-level workflows, public-sector governance, and cross-departmental coordination, making it an excellent opportunity for students interested in public administration, policy, business operations, or government. Through this experience, interns will develop a strong understanding of public-sector governance and Board operations, gain practical experience in project coordination and process improvement, and build foundational skills in budgeting, financial analysis, and administrative management. Interns will also strengthen their written and verbal communication skills, learn how to collaborate across departments, and gain insight into how executive offices support large-scale organizational decision-making. This internship provides the opportunity to acquire valuable professional experience and a deeper understanding of how complex public agencies operate at the executive and governance level.
Responsibilities
+ Assist with implementation of departmental process improvements, including redesign of agencywide OSEC SharePoint.
+ Assist with planning and implementation for all board meeting tasks.
+ Assist with all aspects of budget preparation and submission, including but not limited to budget entry, participation in meetings with our Management and Budget Department, creation of cost benefits analysis, etc.
+ Additional projects and tasks to be assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
+ Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
+ Major in Computer Science, Political Science, Finance, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Public Administration, Public Policy, or related discipline
Desired Qualifications
+ Experience with Microsoft apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.
+ Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, REST API, Microsoft Graph, SharePoint Framework, JSON formatting, PowerShell script, Power automate, etc.
+ Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
+ Interest in public service and/or transportation
+ Willingness to learn
+ Strong written and oral communication skills
+ Attention to detail and flexibility to manage high-priority projects simultaneously
+ Knowledge of advanced SharePoint creation and maintenance
Internship Details
+ The start date is expected to be in March 2026
+ This internship will require a minimum of 20 hours per week
+ This internship requires some travel to Jersey City, New Jersey
+ In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.

Compensation & Benefits
+ The hourly rate range is $18.61 to $28.72 (the exact rate will be determined by internship type and rising school year)
