    Description of Duties

     

    This position, located in the Public Defender's Office, is responsible for working with attorneys to promote rehabilitative, restorative, and client-centered outcomes in criminal cases, including alternatives to pretrial detention and incarceration and zealously advocating for clients and ensuring they receive the services and support needed during all phases of a criminal case.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma; plus:

    (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice or one of the social or behavioral sciences plus one (1) year paid or volunteer** full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in sentencing advocacy, law enforcement (including corrections), investigations, the supervision of individuals on probation/parole, social work or casework, mental health counseling, counseling chemically dependent individuals, or an offender re-entry, rehabilitative, counseling or workforce development program; OR,

     

    (B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or a New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice or one of the social or behavioral sciences plus three (3) years paid or volunteer** full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as described in (A) above; OR,

     

    (C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

     

    ** Volunteer experience must be documented by the participating agency and signed by the appointing authority. Employment dates, average number of hours worked per week, and job duties must be included. Documentation must be included with your application.
