    Job Description: Nurse / Physician Substitute

     

    Under the direction of the Medical Director and/or Center Licensed Physician(s), the Nurse (Physician Substitute) is responsible for determining the acceptability and suitability of all first-time and returning donors. This includes following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with FDA guidance and regulations.

     

    The Nurse reviews normal donor laboratory results and refers abnormal findings to the Licensed Physician for further evaluation. This role works closely with the Medical Director or Licensed Physician(s) when making decisions that directly impact donor eligibility. Additionally, the Nurse provides medical oversight in screening, phlebotomy, and plasma processing areas.

    Key Responsibilities

    + Perform physical examinations for new, returning, and annual donors (excluding donors receiving red blood cell immunizations).

    + Administer and explain informed consent documents for plasmapheresis and other applicable donation programs.

    + Provide education on the AIDS Bulletin and assess donor understanding of high-risk activities.

    + Maintain accurate, legible, and complete donor records in compliance with cGMP standards.

    + Review donor laboratory results within required timeframes; refer abnormal results to the Licensed Physician.

    + Observe and approve staff training in medically related areas.

    + Ensure donor reviews are completed according to SOPs.

    + Provide immediate care and assessment for donor reactions.

    + Document and manage all medical incidents, including follow-up per SOPs.

    Required Skills

    + Medical & Technical Skills: Automated collection, phlebotomy, sample processing, centrifuging, EMR systems.

    + Certifications: CPR certified (or ability to obtain), phlebotomy certification preferred.

    + Knowledge Areas: Medical terminology, nursing practices, laboratory procedures, healthcare compliance.

    Education & Licensing

    + High school diploma or equivalent required.

    + Current RN, LPN, or Advanced EMT license in the state of operation.

    + Annual GMP training required.

    Experience Level

    + Intermediate – Prior experience in nursing, donor screening, or related healthcare roles preferred.

    This is a Contract position based out of Maryville, TN.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $52.00/hr.
