    JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT: Conducts building inspections to ensure compliance with municipal building codes and related regulations.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Inspects buildings under construction or during remodeling to determine compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical code requirements and to ensure the application of safe construction practices.

    2. Inspects buildings being moved within, into, or out of the city for compliance with regulations of the building code.

    3. Receives phone calls from contractors concerning work in progress. Answers questions related to building code.

    4. Studies new materials, methods, and appliances of building construction to keep current on modern development.

    5. Maintains records regarding inspections.

    6. Reviews plans of proposed buildings for code compliance.

    7. Investigates public complaints.

    8. Determines compliance with accessibility.

     

    The above duties and responsibilities include those tasks, physical and mental requirements, visual requirements, unique physical surroundings, and mental/cognitive abilities required to perform the essential elements of the position.

    GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Education and Special License(s)/Certifications - High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree in a related field preferred. Certified by a major model code association, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire. Valid state driver's license, or ability to obtain by employment date, required.

    2. Experience – One to three years of experience in building construction at the skilled or foreman level.

    3. Skills - Skill in operating applicable tools and equipment. Knowledge of major types of building construction materials and methods, and stages of construction. Knowledge of municipal building codes and related ordinances.

    4. Mental Requirements - Ability to communicate effectively and interface with the general public. Ability to detect violations including poor workmanship, inferior materials, and hazard of fire and collapse. Ability to follow through with appropriate action to correct the situation. Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints.

    5. Physical Requirements - Must be able to sit for prolonged periods; must be able to listen to normal conversation; must be able to walk occasionally, and use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; must be able to reach with hands and arms; must be able to have vision sufficient to see close up and have the ability to adjust focus; and, must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and transport it 15 feet.
