    Job Summary

    The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking a full-time clinical-track faculty member to work in the Hospital Services Section. Primary clinical responsibilities will be as a hospitalist which includes coverage of the Psychiatry Emergency Services and the Adult Inpatient Psychiatry unit. The successful candidate will participate in the clinical, administrative, and teaching aspects of the adult inpatient, and emergency psychiatry programs, with a primary focus on inpatient work. The candidate will join a dynamic group of hospital-based psychiatrists under a leadership team that values clinical ability and educational effort.

    BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

    Primary clinical responsibilities for this position will be on the Psychiatry Inpatient Unit. This unit treats the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders. Most patients are admitted via UM Psychiatric Emergency Services or the medical-surgical units at UM Hospital. The inpatient psychiatric unit serves as a primary community hospital for the Ann Arbor region as well as a tertiary care referral center for treatment-resistant mood disorders and other refractory conditions.

     

    Maintaining excellent continuity of care has been a key focus of our program. The Psychiatry Inpatient Unit provides a consistently high level of care 7 days per week. This position may involve weekend work.

     

    Psychiatric Emergency

     

    The Psychiatry Emergency Service sees approximately 7000 visits a year. Crisis evaluation, treatment initiation, stabilization, and referral are available 24 hours a day/seven days a week every day of the year. Patients of all ages and with all diagnoses are seen. After hours, clinical responsibilities include coverage of the inpatient adult and child psychiatry units, and consultation to the medical emergency departments and to the inpatient floors.

     

    Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be successful in this position. Because of the increasing medical complexity of patients on this unit and throughout the hospital, a familiarity and comfort with medical issues is necessary; though consultation with top-notch generalists and specialists at UM Hospital is readily available. Academic interests are encouraged. Programmatic research is not expected and specific protected time to do research is not allocated. For those interested in research, the Department of Psychiatry and affiliated institutes at the University of Michigan provide state-of-the-art research facilities.

     

    Scholarly Activity

     

    Academic interests are encouraged. Accomplishments such as book chapters, development of educational programs, and inquiry about the clinical aspects of the provision of care are examples. Ideal candidate will have current grant funding..

    Required Qualifications*

    A doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy is required.Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary. Board-certified/eligible in Psychiatry.Board-certification/eligibility in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry desired but not required.Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration.Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary. Active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical staff.

    Background Screening
