    **The Minnesota Department of Transportation, Metro District is hiring multiple Transportation Generalist positions** which May be located at any of the following Metro Truck Station locations: Anoka, Arden Hills, Camden Days (Minneapolis), Camden Nights (Minneapolis), Cedar Days (Richfield), Cedar Nights (Richfield), Chaska, Eden Prairie, Forest Lake, Golden Valley, Golden Valley Graffiti Crew, Golden Valley Traffic Services, Hastings, Lakeville, Maple Grove Days, Maple Grove Nights, Maryland Days, Maryland Nights, Mendota Days, Mendota Nights, North Branch, Oakdale Days, Oakdale Nights, Oakdale Traffic Services, Plymouth, Shakopee, and Spring Lake Park.

     

    The **Transportation Generalist** maintains and reconstructs roadways; maintains traffic barriers; participate in bituminous road repair culvert cleaning; guardrail repair; and maintains roadsides. In addition, this position will perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operate tractor mowers and small rollers; remove objects from roadways; set up traffic controls in high volume traffic and work associated with accidents, spill cleanup, rut repair, dead deer, etc. Additional duties include but are not limited to:

     

    + Performing landscaping duties on roadside (chipping of tree limbs, stump removal/grinding)

    + Conducting rest area maintenance to wayside rests and scale areas (building and grounds maintenance, vegetation control, and parking surface repairs)

    + Driving and operating a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow and ice duties, maintaining roadways for snow and ice control which includes: removing snow from roadways and shoulders; applying anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removing frozen ice and materials from culverts; performing night or dawn patrols; preparing and inspecting winter equipment, such as snowplow equipment, and cutting edges and sanders.

    Shift Differential

    The shift differential for employees working on assigned shifts which begin before 6:00 A.M. or which end at or after 6:00 P.M. shall be two dollars and twenty-five cents ($2.25) per hour for all hours worked before 6:00 A.M. or after 6:00 P.M. on that shift. Such shift differential shall be in addition to the employee's regular rate of pay and shall be included in all payroll calculations but shall not apply during periods of paid leave. An employee who requests and is approved by their supervisor to work before 6 A.M. or after 6 P.M., shall not be eligible for the shift differential.

    Night Maintenance Premium Pay

    Maintenance employees working night shifts of durations lasting three (3) months or more, covered by this agreement, shall receive Night Premium Pay of $2.00/hour for all shifts which start between 7:00 P.M. and 12:00 A.M. This will apply to all hours for the scheduled straight time shift. Such premium pay shall be in addition to the employee's hourly rate of pay, and any shift differential the employee would otherwise be entitled to. The premium pay shall be included in a payroll calculations for shifts actually worked, but shall not apply during periods of paid leave, or in calculations of back-pay.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:

    + A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction AND a tanker endorsement. **CDL must be listed on resume.**

    AND

    + One (1) year of experience performing activities in any of the following: snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment or farm experience)

    OR

    + (Education): Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.

     

    Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

    Selected candidates for the Transportation Generalist will be required to obtain a Class A CDL prior to the probationary period ending.

    Physical Requirements

    The physical demands of this job will vary but typically requires lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous manual labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling and climbing. May require frequent exposure to weather elements year-round (cold and hot) daily, as well as working near traffic and heavy equipment.     Additional Requirements

    Successful candidates for the Transportation Generalist positions will be required to pass a computerized ACT math and reading test as part of the hiring process. The required passing score for the math portion is a level 3 or higher and the reading portion is a level 4 or higher.

     

    All job offers are contingent upon the candidate passing a Criminal Background Check, SEMA4 Records Check, Drug Screening, Employment Verification, Reference Checks and Driver's License Screening at the required level for the position.

     

    The incumbents will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).

     

    Incumbents will be required to immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called in the event of an emergency and/or snow and ice event.
