    Description

    The Department of Horticultural Sciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University, invites applications for one full-time, Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure) faculty position with a 9-month academic appointment beginning August 3, 2026. Applicants will be considered for the faculty title Instructional Assistant Professor or Lecturer, depending on qualifications.

     

    The Department of Horticultural Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University is one of the only departments in the nation to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Horticulture, which focuses on plant-human interactions, socio-horticulture, floral art and design, interior scaping, entrepreneurship, with plans to expand offerings in horticulture therapy. The department is also leading the Plant Nature and Health Initiative (https://iha.tamu.edu/plants-nature-and-health-initiative/) in collaboration with the School of Public Health and is home to the Benz School of Floral Design that offers continuing education to the public.

     

    The successful candidate will be expected to teach a minimum of two (2) or three (3) courses or five (5) sections of a single course per semester. The individual will be responsible for teaching Hort 203 Floral Design and serve as instructor of record for the labs associated with the course and manage the certificate program in floral design. Additional courses in Sociohorticulture, Horticultural Therapy or other areas of Horticulture may be assigned based on the needs of the undergraduate program.

     

    The successful candidate will also be responsible for coordinating the procurement of all floral materials, serve as co-advisor for the Texas A&M student chapter of the Student American Institute of Floral Design (SAIFD), assist with coordination and implementation of campus special events through class projects and SAIFD, plan, procure and process lab materials and supplies, engage with floral and art organizations, public partners, and horticultural organizations on a local, regional, state, and national level, and assist with the supervision of two or three student workers. The candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills, proficiency with word processing and spreadsheets, a willingness to learn multiple TAMU software systems, and experience supervising personnel and student workers. The candidate should be proficient and tactful in his/her ability to meet, communicate, and deal effectively with students, visitors, the public, co-workers, and University leadership, and serve on departmental/college/university committees.

     

    The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    Qualifications

    For an Instructional Assistant Professor title:

    Minimum/Required Qualifications: The applicant must have a Ph.D. in Horticulture, Fine Arts, Arts, Humanities, or a related discipline at the interface of plants and arts. In case of a Ph.D. in Fine Arts, Arts or a related discipline, a basic understanding of plant biology is required. Strong knowledge and experience in floral art and design, or floriculture, or post-harvest biology of cut flowers or interior scaping or socio-horticulture or horticulture therapy and at least 1-year teaching experience as a primary instructor or teaching assistant at a university, technical or community college in the field or in a related discipline is required. National accreditation in floral design (CFD or AIFD) or fine arts is desired but not necessary. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain accreditation within three years of joining. The breakdown of effort will be 90% Teaching and 10% Service.

    For a Lecturer title:

    Minimum/Required Qualifications: The applicant must have a master’s degree in Horticulture, Arts, Fine Arts, Humanities or a related discipline at the interface of plants and arts. In case of a master’s in Arts, Fine Arts, Humanities or a related discipline, a basic understanding of plant biology is required. Strong knowledge and experience in floral art and design or floriculture or post-harvest biology of cut flowers or interior scaping, or socio-horticulture or horticulture therapy, and significant teaching experience at the college/school level in the field or in a related field are required. National accreditation in floral design (CFD or AIFD) is desired but not necessary. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain accreditation in the future within three years of joining. The breakdown of effort will be 100% Teaching.
