Description:
SUMMARY
Provides comprehensive evaluations and treatment of sleep disorders, under the general supervision of the Clinical
Director (MD), Polysomnographic technologists or designees, including polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic
services, patient care and sleep education.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Minimum: Successful completion of a polysomnography program, of no less than one year duration, associated with a
state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility; OR equivalent experience and documented
proficiency in all required competencies.
All technicians who are not registered by the ABSM, NBRC, BRPT, or other accepted certification:
a. Must be enrolled in or have completed the A-STEP Online Self Study Modules,
b. Or must be enrolled in or have completed a CAAHEP accredited sleep technology training program,
or electroneurodiagnostic (END) program, or respiratory therapy add-on track for sleep technology.
**Preferred** : Current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in
polysomnography.
Credentials/Licensure
Minimum: Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification; Must obtain registration by the Board of
Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) within 18 months
Related Experience
Minimum: Strong medical background.
Preferred: CRT, RRT, LPN, RN.
Computer Competency
Familiarity with standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including email, e-learning,
intranet and computer navigation. Thorough knowledge of sleep software program and is demonstrated
via competency. Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions.
Physical/Mental
Minimum: Frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or
balance; and talk or hear. Occasionally required to walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Regularly lift and/or
move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50
pounds. Ability to lift up to 35lbs. and perform push/pull tasks requiring a maximum force of 35 lbs. Ability to
physically operate safe patient movement equipment in compliance with the Safe Patient Movement Policy. Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Gathers and Analyzes Patient Information
• Reviews history, physical information, medications, procedure request and study protocol.
• Completes and verifies documentation. Ensures any medication that were taken prior to entering the Sleep Lab by patients are
recording in the sleep lab software system for provider review.
• Explains the procedure and orients the patient to the sleep center.
Testing Preparation Procedures
• Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments, if necessary.
• Cleans sleep equipment (masks, tubing, electrodes, etc.) according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
• Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
• Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments, if necessary.
• Performs routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
Polysomnographic Procedures
• Follows procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT),
parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.
• Follows “lights out” procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation,
respiratory and heart rates, etc.).
• Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identifies
and reports signal abnormalities.
• Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events
in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
• Assists with appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as
continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
• Follows “lights on” procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (e.g. repeats the
physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.).
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and
education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Polysomnographic Record Scoring
• Assists with scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
• Scores clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc).
Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues
Performs other related duties as assigned.
