Under general direction, develops and assigns graphic design services for printed and digital promotional materials for all Recreation programs, facilities, special events and festivals, and supports the Recreation Division (including the golf course) with all marketing efforts including social media.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Manages the production of the Thornton Activities Guide. Responsible for creating design and layout as well as coordinating the translation, printing, and mailing of this publication.
Designs and creates original artwork from concept to camera-ready stage for printing on paper, web, apparel and other promotional items, as well as "one-of-a-kind" artwork for displays, kiosks or other unique promotional avenues.
Creates brochures, flyers, postcards, posters, etc. of internal and external promotions using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat and Photoshop. Provides graphic design services for printed material using desktop publishing as well as traditional production techniques.
Maintains scheduling and develops artwork for department's lobby televisions. Assists in the design and distribution of electronic communications. Develops static advertising for the city's local TV station. Schedules and uploads artwork via web applications.
Designs and writes ads to be used in various printed publications, to further promote recreation programs, events and festivals.
Conducts copy editing of text submitted by staff including, but not limited to, flyers, brochures, programs and posters.
Takes photographs for activities guide cover and inside pages, various brochures, programs, posters, web promotion and social media purposes.
Conducts underwriting, sponsorship and activities relating to the Recreation Division's programs, special events and festivals.
Builds relationships with businesses who contribute in-kind and monetary items to programs, events, festivals, and facilities by assisting in fulfilling rights and benefits as laid out in sponsorship packages.
Assists with the coordination and implementation of all special events and festivals including, but not limited to, Thorntonfest, Fourth of July, Harvest Fest, Winterfest, etc.
Designs and produces "Levels of Service" presentation every few years for presentation to City Council.
Manages advertising budgets and develops advertising schedule.
Prepares routine narrative and/or statistical reports.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Graphic Design or related field; five years of graphic design experience, including multi-media graphic design experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of the city of Thornton recreation program goals and objectives.
Knowledge of marketing, advertising, and promotion.
Knowledge of management principles including supervision and training.
Knowledge of recreation programs, facilities and special events.
Knowledge of graphic design, layout and production techniques.
Knowledge of photography and use of photographic materials.
Knowledge of basic recreation philosophy.
Knowledge of desktop publishing and creative design software such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, PhotoShop, Excel, Word, Publisher and Power Point.
Knowledge of municipal government functions and processes.
Skill in creating documents for marketing, advertising, and promotion.
Skill in communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with the public.
Skill in the design, illustration and layout of artwork for advertising and marketing documents
Skill in using word processing and graphics development software on desktop publishing systems.
Skill in planning, developing, recommending, coordinating and organizing recreation services and programs.
Skill in customer service.
Ability to design, illustrate, and photograph.
Ability to work with the public.
Ability to exercise initiative and judgment, and make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to assist with special events and projects.
Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays or flexible schedules.
Ability to proof and edit written materials.
Ability to use personal computers and a variety of software packages.
Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers, other city staff, vendors, and the public in the completion of projects.
Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities.
Ability to use a digital camera and scanner.
Ability to handle multiple work assignments and meet deadlines.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly light work; exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. The employee is required to have close visual acuity. The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Anticipated timeline:
Interviews will be held January 28–30, and the ideal start date for this position is mid-February.
