    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

    The Deschutes County Road Department is responsible for the development, operation, and maintenance of the County road system, consisting of approximately 900 miles of roadway.     ABOUT THE JOB:

    The Traffic Device Specialist position is responsible for performing a variety technical skills, physical labor, and compliance with safety and regulatory standards, ensuring safe and effective traffic control operations. This includes maintenance, repair, and installation of highway signs and other traffic control devices; design and manufacturing of highway sign panels; and i nspection and condition assessment of highway signs and other traffic control devices. The Specialist will also perform other duties as directed, related to Public Works activities.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Designing, manufacturing, installing, and maintaining traffic control devices in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and supplements.

    + Perform preventative maintenance work, changing bulbs/LEDs; testing and inspecting new and existing equipment.

    + Performing a broad range of manual labor including pushing, lifting, shoveling, digging, removing debris, climbing, cutting, moving obstacles, loading and unloading material, and inspecting and installing posts.

    + Operating a variety of hand tools, power tools, and light equipment in the performance of construction, maintenance, and repair work to traffic control devices, which may include drills, augers, chainsaws, flatbeds, air compressors, generators, small lift cranes, and other tools and equipment.

    What You Will Bring:

    Knowledge of or experience with:

    + County policies and procedures.

    + Traffic control device standards, including theManual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices(MUTCD) and supplements.

    + Principles and practices of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

    Skill In:

    + Care, maintenance, and safe operation of equipment and tools.

    + Equipment operation and manual labor in sometimes adverse weather conditions and other uncomfortable situations.

    + Operation of standard and specialized computer software applications.

    + Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

    + Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, citizens, developers, advocates, and regional agencies.

    Compensation

     

    $5,232.87 to $6,682.28 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + High School Diploma or GED equivalent;

    + AND four (4) years of experience in traffic control device maintenance, traffic control device manufacturing, road maintenance, or other related work;

    + OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Experience in utilizing asset management enterprise software for traffic control devices.

    + Demonstrated knowledge of current MUTCD ( Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards and guidelines.

     

    Necessary Special Requirements

     

    Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
