Shenandoah University’s Department of Special Education is accepting applications for an Adjunct Teaching Faculty, Special Education. This is a part-time Remote (online) position.
The Department of Special Education is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Adjunct Professor to teach our graduate-level course: Language Acquisition and Reading . This role is critical in preparing the next generation of special educators to teach students with disabilities how to read and write.
The ideal candidate will combine academic rigor with practical experience, delivering engaging instruction in a synchronous online environment during evening hours to accommodate working professionals.
This course provides an overview and examines the foundational knowledge of reading and writing that includes an understanding of the complex nature of language acquisition and reading. Skills in this area include: phonemic awareness, an understanding of sound and symbol relationships, explicit phonics instruction, syllables, phonemes, morphemes, decoding skills, word attack skills, and knowledge of how phonics, syntax, and semantics interact.
Additional skills shall include proficiency in a wide variety of comprehension, vocabulary, and writing strategies, as well as the ability to foster appreciation of a variety of literature, independent reading, and reading and writing across content areas.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Instructional Delivery: Lead weekly evening online sessions focused state competencies
+ Curriculum Application: Provide a comprehensive overview of teaching and learning strategies tailored to students with diverse learning needs and disabilities.
+ Student Support: Provide timely feedback on assignments, hold virtual office hours, and mentor students on best practices in the field.
+ Compliance: Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and final grading in accordance with university policy.
Required Skills
+ Academic Credentials: A Master’s or Doctoral degree in Special Education from an accredited institution.
+ Subject Matter Expertise: Deep familiarity with the teaching of reading and research based strategies for reading and writing.
+ Online Proficiency: Experience utilizing Learning Management Systems (specifically CANVAS).
+ Availability: Must be available to teach during evening hours (typically between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM EST).
Required Experience
+ Current or previous certification in Special Education.
+ Experience teaching special education in K-12 schools.
+ Experience teaching at a college or university.
+ Experience teaching reading.
