    Overview

     

    Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the day to day responsibilities of the staff that actively operate the PPL Transmission system(s), specifically the PPL EU and Rhode Island Energy (RIE) transmission systems. This position works to direct and ensure the reliable and secure operation of PPL’s Transmission System(s) in accordance with FERC, NERC, RFC, and NPCC guidelines, and PJM's, ISO-NE’s, and PPL's operating procedures and practices on a minute to minute basis. The Lead Supervisor directs both operations and field personnel in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Transmission equipment and facilities under the control and responsibility of Transmission Operations.

    Responsibilities

    + Provide supervision of the Transmission System Operators (TSOs) in day to day decisions involving the operation, construction and maintenance of the transmission system to assure a high quality of service performance and ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of transmission facilities in the PPL service area during normal and emergency by directing action to relieve electrical system stresses caused by contingencies.

    + Direct the operation of the Transmission System(s) in a manner which will enable the system to survive the loss of the next worst single line, transformer, or bus fault, as defined in RFC and NPCC guidelines, and PJM's, ISO-NE’s, and PPL’s operating procedures and practices.

    + Analyze prearranged outage requests on the Transmission System(s) to ensure reliable, “single contingency criterion" operation. Reschedule the facility outage or reconfigure the system, as necessary per operating procedures and practices, to ensure reliable operation. Coordinates communication within and external to the Transmission Control Center relative to requested outages and assures that the T-0 outage week work packages are complete and accurate. Acts as the reliability coordinator on shift.

    + Direct the application of PPL's Permit and Tag procedures in PA and RIE’s G014 Clearance and Control Procedures in RI on the Bulk Power Transmission system(s) and prepare all related documents to promote safety and reliability of the Bulk Electric System(s).

    + Supervise and assist in operational activities of the PA and RIE System Operators as required. Direct System Operator operational activities during emergencies involving transmission level lines and substations as required.

    + Following partial or total power system collapse, direct and control system restoration activities, including command and control of available generation resources and transmission facilities, to ensure a safe, reliable, secure, and expeditious return to normal operation.

    + Implement Emergency Procedures, at the discretion of certified TSOs until certified, for the purpose of maintaining system integrity. This may include shedding load when system conditions deteriorate.

    + Optimize operation of the Transmission Management System (TMS) and associated computer systems through continuous monitoring of performance characteristics, performing or coordinating database updates, and identifying and correcting areas of deteriorating application performance.

    + Produce and disseminate real-time system information and/or daily activity reports, as necessary, to appropriate personnel, i.e. Public Utility Commission, PEMA, Company Management, and other Utilities. Publish and review daily Executive Summary reports to communicate Transmission Operations activities to key internal stakeholders.

    + Supports PPL’s portfolio strategies by developing and maintaining PPL’s mid-term and long-term outage plan. Actively participate in and engage other departments in developing the outage plan and an evaluation of the risk to the system.

    + Supports error free operations in the Transmission Control Center (TCC) by abiding by Human Performance procedures and guidelines, conducting observations and sharing constructive insights amongst peers, and supporting or leading event analyses to promote PPL’s culture of continuous learning.

    + Assists in the development of specific NERC compliance documentation for all NERC Standards. Assists developing standard documentation for RF, NERC and PJM audits. Provides testimony and gathers evidence for standards.

    + Performs all duties of Transmission System Operator, as required, assuring required records and logs are up to date.

    + Physical presence in the office/on-site to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among peers and leadership.

    + May be assigned an emergency storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.

    Qualifications

    Required Education:

    + Bachelor’s degree- in engineering/electrical technology, mathematics, or related technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience on a year-for-year basis.

    + PJM Transmission Operator certification and/or NERC Transmission Operator certification and Completion of PPL TSO training program is required.

    Required Experience:

    + Minimum of 5 years of engineering, system operator, utility, or other professional experience in technical, high reliability environments required

    + Must be willing to do shift work and work overtime

    Licenses / Certifications / Other Qualifications:

    + PJM Transmission Operator Required

    + NERC Transmission Operator Required

    + PJM Generation certification Preferred

    Remote Work

    The company reserves the right to determine if this position will be assigned to work on-site, remotely, or a combination of both. Assigned work location may change.
