    Position: Student Cleaner (16-18 yrs old – must be current GC student)

    Student Cleaner: Monday – Friday B-shift during the school year (4 paid hours after school plus 30-minute unpaid lunch break – total 4.5 hours – Consistent shift hours mutually determined with supervisor but must start after end of school day and must be completed by 9:00pm). During school breaks, Student Cleaner will have the option of working A shift (6:00 am – 11:30 am) or not working.

     

    Note: Students that wish to work during the summer should notify the Facilities supervisor by June 1st. Shift during summer break will be A-shift (6:00 am – 11:30 am with unpaid 30-minute lunch).

    Position Function:

    This is a labor position involving performance of cleaning duties in the upkeep of building interiors, furniture, and fixtures for a department, agency, hospital or school. The work involves following simple routines and procedures in accomplishing tasks. This position is distinguished from entry level custodial positions by absence of plumbing and carpentry. Work is performed under direct supervision of a Custodian, Assistant Custodian or Custodial Assistant Foreman who assigns cleaning tasks and inspects completed work. Does related work as required.

     

    Compensation/Pay Range: $16.40/hr. Additional $0.75 shift differential for employees working B Shift.

    Essential Functions:

    + Sweeps, dust mops and may polish floors, hallways, stairwells, and entranceways.

    + Dusts, polishes, and cleans office and school furniture, electrical fixtures, woodwork, stair railings, radiators, and venetian blinds.

    + Washes marks, stains, and fingerprints from walls, tables, chairs, desks, cupboards, counters and glass.

    + Cleans lavatory facilities including fixtures, toilets, and floors.

    + Vacuums carpets and upholstered furniture and removes minor stains.

    + Empties ashtrays, wastebaskets, and pencil sharpeners into large trash containers.

    + Fills dispensers with disposable paper products.

    + Secures and locks windows and office classroom doors.

    + Turns off lights and unplugs small electrical appliances.

    + Straightens and arranges office, classroom and cafeteria furniture.

    + Washes chalkboards and chalk trays.

    + Washes windows and mirrors.

    Additional Duties:

    + Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs.

    + Performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

    Equipment

     

    Uses cleaning equipment including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, and hand tools.

    Safety Requirements

    + Follow all district safety rules and chemical hygiene procedures.

    + Wear required protective gear (e.g., gloves, masks).

    + Use tools and equipment only as trained and permitted for minors.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    + Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

    + Willingness to perform repetitive tasks.

    + Dependability and punctuality.

    + Ability to use cleaning agents and equipment safely.

    + Physical ability to meet job demands (standing, lifting, bending, etc.).

     

    Training Provided

    All student cleaners receive training in:

    + Safe use of cleaning chemicals (MSDS compliance).

    + Proper equipment operation (vacuums, floor machines, etc.).

    + Safety procedures and protective gear.

    + Building routines and cleaning standards.

    Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

    + Works in standard office and school building environments.

    + Comfortable working outside even when the weather isn’t ideal.

    + Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents and contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.

    + Occasional outdoor work in inclement weather.

    Qualifications Profile:

    Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.

    Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

    + Must be 16–18 years old.

    + Must be a current Gates Chili student.

    + Valid New York State Youth Work Permit.

    + No prior experience is required.

    + NYS driver’s license OR ability to provide reliable transportation.

    + Must comply with NYS labor laws for minors, including permitted work hours and restricted tasks.

    Student Employment Expectations

    + Maintain satisfactory academic performance and school attendance.

    + Report to work on time and follow call-in procedures for absences.

    + Demonstrate respectful behavior and professionalism.

    + Follow all district policies and staff directions.
