    Description

    The City of Norfolk Department of Parks & Recreation is seeking a Recreational Specialist to assist in planning, implementing and evaluating recreational programs and daily activities of the center. The Recreation Specialist assists in managing the operations of the center and provides assistance to employees; evaluates recreational programs and daily activities of the center; and interacts with children, adults and seniors. The Recreation Specialist will participate in activities in addition to providing informational materials, directing volunteers and employees, and contributing to the cultural growth of individuals.

    Department Starting Hiring Salary: $51,610.42

    Essential Functions

    Essential functions include but are not limited to:

    + Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating recreational programs and daily activities of the center.

    + Serves on committees for the planning and marketing of events.

    + Assists in managing facility operations and aids employees. Interacts with children, teens, adults, and seniors.

    + Participates in activities in addition to providing informational materials, directing volunteers and part-time employees as well as contributes to the cultural growth of individuals.

    + Assists with the management of daily operations of the facility by scheduling and monitoring volunteers and part-time employees, compiling figures and preparing reports, providing lesson plans and program planning, authorizing permits, and collecting fees for programs and rental of the facility.

    + Interacts with citizens by responding to inquiries, and contributing to the growth and development of youth, teens, adults, seniors, and volunteers.

    + Markets the recreation program by distributing flyers and announcements to the community and submitting press releases.

    + Serves on committees for the planning and marketing of events.

    + Performs related duties by carrying out administrative responsibilities, transporting patrons, submits and writes initiatives and provides input on purchases

    Education/Experience

    Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

     

    Six months experience.

    Preferred Education/Experience:

    + Associate's degree in Recreation and Tourism, Physical Education, or any closely related field.

    + At least one (1) year of experience in recreation and leisure activities.

    + At least one (1) year of experience working with youth, teens, adults, or seniors

    Preferred License(s) and/or Certifications:

    + Valid Driver’s License

    + Frist Aid, CPR certified

     

    Additional Information & Requirements

     

    Work Hours: Monday to Sunday; 6:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.; not to exceed 40 hours per week; flexible hours

     

    will apply including weekends, holidays, and special events.

     

    + Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

    + Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

    + Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

    + Retirement

     

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
