The Medical/Surgical RN’s plays a key role when the patient is in at Union Health. 5E provides care of patients after general surgery, and also provides care of cancer patients undergoing treatment, or experiencing diagnosis-related concerns.

This unit is led by Nursing Care Manager, Sydney Caldwell, and Nursing Director, Ashley Morgan.
Essential & valuable nursing skills gained on this unit :
+ Care of the surgical patient post-operative to discharge
+ Care of CVAD and PICC lines
+ Wound vac and wound care
+ Foley insertion and care of CBI
+ Nasogastric tube insertion and maintenance
+ Ostomy care and teaching
+ Chest tube care and maintenance
+ JP and Accordian drain care and maintenance
+ Blood product administration
Unit Culture :
+ 8-week new graduate RN orientation
+ Preceptor support
+ New graduate residency program
+ Nurse Apprentice program
+ Nurse Extern program
RN job details:
Essential Job Duties:
+ Collaborates with the physician or manager to determine needs of patients
+ Completes the routine physical assessment using common assessment skills in a systematic manner.
+ Contributes to a plan of care for pre-defined patient problems.
+ Respects patients' rights, including the right to inform, privacy, confidentiality, and the right to refuse care.
+ Assists with patient education to promote self-care and patient independence
+ Follows company policies and procedures and department protocols.
+ Assists the physician with special procedures
Qualifications:
+ Graduate from an accredited ASN or BSN program
+ Must have Indiana RN license
+ Previous RN experience preferred but not required
License/Certification:
+ BLS certification
+ IN RN license
