    Job Description

    The NYC Law Department is seeking a motivated individual for its Family Court Division to work under supervision, with wide latitude for independent judgment, performs work in the supervision, planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring and/or evaluation of community development programs. The selected candidates will perform the following duties including but not limited to:

     

    - Diversion programs. Diversion programs in the juvenile justice system are community-based services designed to enable youth accused of acts of juvenile delinquency to effect rehabilitation without formal prosecution by completing various program requirements. Examples of Diversion programs include Youth Court and mediation. The Community Coordinator will assist attorneys in screening cases to determine whether youth is eligible for Diversion services, and then track the youth’s progress by maintaining contact with the Diversion program. The Community Coordinator will also track general success for each Diversion program and identify potential new Diversion programs for older youth and for the current population, including gang intervention programs.

     

    - Building and developing relationships with community groups/ community-based organizations and the NYPD. The Community Coordinator will continue and further develop relationships with the police precincts (especially high volume precincts) to enhance the office’s understanding of current crime trends in each community. They will attend precinct council meetings. They will familiarize themselves and partner with community groups and community-based organizations, clergy and elected officials in order to create partnerships to better serve the community and youth who become involved in the juvenile justice system and for the community to have a deeper understanding of the mission of our work. They will identify schools, develop relationships with personnel and conduct school presentations on topics related to juvenile justice. They will organize school presentations including presentations on anti-gun violence.

     

    - Coordination of community events. The Community Coordinator will serve as a coordinator for and representative of the office at community events.

     

    - Victims Services. The Community Coordinator will coordinate with victims services and provide an analysis of witness feedback surveys which are sent to each witness after cases are completed to further improve the practice.

     

    - Gang/Crew Trends. The Community Coordinator will work the attorneys to track and identify gang and youth crew affiliation and trends to supplement case investigations and identify service needs in communities.

     

    - Precinct Crime Trends. The Community Coordinator will work with data to help identify precinct-specific crime trends to determine service needs in communities.

     

    - Declination Trends. The Community Coordinator will work to identify reasons for declination of cases to determine whether training needs exist and whether different outreach to victims and witnesses is necessary

     

    Some of the physical activities performed and environmental conditions experienced include lifting and carrying boxes and files; climbing stairs; and traveling throughout the City on all types of public transportation, and/or walking in all kinds of weather, often carrying files and other documents.

     

    *This position will require citywide travel and may require travel to other jurisdictions including within New York State and other jurisdictions. This position may require evening work.*

    Additional Information:

    This would be considered a lateral move for candidates who are currently a city employee.

     

    The assigned work location will be 60 Lafayette Street, New York, NY.

    The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following preferred skills:

    - Excellent interpersonal, organizational and investigative skills.

     

    - Critical thinking with the ability to arrive at logical conclusions.

     

    - The ability to multitask, take initiative and function independently under tight deadlines.

     

    - Proficiency in the MS Office Suite, including but not limited to Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

     

    - Ability to foster good working relationships within the community and with external community based agencies.

     

    - Knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in, juvenile justice and criminal justice.

    Qualifications

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

    2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

    3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
