Job Description
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the nation’s largest public housing authority, with an operating budget of $3.3 billion and over 11,000 employees who manage and maintain 311 developments housing about 400,000 residents. NYCHA also operates the country’s largest Section 8 program, providing rental assistance to approximately 200,000 additional people.
Under direct supervision, the Architectural Intern assists with building-related architectural and compliance work in both field and office settings and receives training aligned with the mission of the Technical Oversight and Special Projects (TOSP) unit. The intern supports introductory-level tasks related to building and apartment inspections, review of building-related permits and documentation, and oversight of other building infrastructure within public housing developments. Assignments may include exposure to plan and permit reviews, field observations, construction and maintenance activities, and regulatory compliance efforts associated with occupied residential buildings and capital work. The intern performs related duties as assigned.
Examples of typical tasks include the following:
- Assist with research and reviews related to buildings, building systems, and facilities, including drawings, reports, permits, and supporting documentation.
- Assist in the review and tracking of plans and technical documents related to construction, alteration, repair, or maintenance work, including building-related permits and approvals.
- Support the preparation of basic sketches, diagrams, or illustrative materials used to document building conditions or layouts.
- Assist in the review of building layouts, apartment configurations, and building systems, with attention to maintenance, constructability, and resident health and safety.
- Participate in field visits and apartment or building inspections to observe conditions, construction activities, and maintenance work.
- Assist in the review of documentation related to construction, demolition, or alteration activities, as well as records supporting building operations and maintenance, in connection with permits, certificates, and regulatory compliance.
- Assist in routine inspection and oversight activities related to building operations and maintenance, under supervision.
- Support the preparation of summaries, tables, and basic analyses related to inspections, observations, and compliance reviews.
- Receive training in public-sector oversight practices, coordination with multiple departments, and document control procedures.
NOTE: A motor vehicle Driver's License valid in the State of New York may be required for certain assignments. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Qualifications
1. A Bachelor of Architecture or a Master of Architecture that is the first professional degree in architecture from an accredited college. Any other type of architectural degree or a degree in architectural technology is not acceptable.
