Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY:
Assist the Director with the on-going development and maintenance of a comprehensive program for patient education and staff development for all modalities within the Respiratory Care Services. Assist in assuring that compliance to all regulatory standards is maintained. Assure that all aspects of patient safety and infection control are monitored and prioritized. Participate in review of documentation for services provided, including maintenance of employee time records, quality control actions, the accuracy and content of diagnostic reports, and maintenance of systems including the patient care documentation system. Perform specialized training in critical care areas and diagnostic procedures. Communicate effectively with physicians, patients, managers and the public. Assess employee performance and intervene with developmental plans as needed. Deliver, set-up and maintain routine and non-routine therapies and equipment (i.e. oxygen, aerosol therapy, ventilators) utilized by Respiratory Therapy. Perform and interpret Arterial Blood Gases and assist in performance of laboratory proficiency testing. Supervise the staff in conducting diagnostic and therapeutic services. In the absence of the director, fulfill the routine duties of the director including supervision, training, monitoring and counseling of staff. Assure that inventory of all essential materials utilized by the departments are maintained.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs patient education and performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as needed.
2. Provides ongoing staff development and specialized training when indicated.
3. Assists the department director in planning, organizing, coordinating and evaluating Respiratory Care Services.
4. Assists in the development of indictors for continuous evaluation and improvement. Assists in the preparation of various documents/reports related to department QI/Risk Management in-services as directed by manager.
5. Actively participates in all pertinent hospital committees as assigned by the department director.
6. Remains current with Joint Commission, state and federal regulatory agency standards, rules and regulations.
7. Uses knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and emergency procedures to provide safe and effective patient care.
8. Maintains strict infection control techniques at all times.
9. Practices, develops and endorses customer service skills in relationships with internal and external customers.
10. Participate in Quality Improvement activities as assigned.
11. Shares the responsibility to assure the readiness, calibration and or reliability of arterial blood gas instrumentation, pulmonary function equipment, stress testing equipment, EKG machines, oximeters and other devices. May complete monthly reports & ensure that regular maintenance is performed as indicated on some devices and that quality standards are met
12. Assists manager in developing department policies and procedures pertinent to new therapies or changing processes.
13. Assists manager in meeting departmental budget by assessing staffing and monitoring supply cost.
14. Regular, punctual and dependable attendance. Assists in accurately recording staff time and attendance in Kronos and Scheduler. Takes call according to the needs of the department.
15. Maintains supplies and medications as needed by the departments in the service.
16. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:
• High School or GED required
• Required: Graduate of AMA approved Respiratory Care Program
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
• Current State of Florida Respiratory Therapist license required
• BLS – American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS Provider card required
• ACLS – American Heart Association or American Red Cross ACLS Provider card required
• PALS– American Heart Association or American Red Cross PALS Provider card required
• NRP-Neonatal Resuscitation Program NRP Provider issued card required
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:
• Minimum of five years clinical experience in Respiratory Care required
