Certified Veterinary Technician
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Certified Veterinary Technician to support the medical services and mission of our Afford-a-Care Pet Clinics. This position plays a vital role in delivering high-quality, affordable veterinary care while ensuring positive, supportive experiences for both pets and their owners. The ideal candidate is passionate about animal welfare, thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment, and is committed to providing excellent patient and client care.
As a Veterinary Technician, you will work closely with veterinarians to provide comprehensive medical care for companion animals. This includes assisting with physical examinations, surgical and dental procedures, monitoring anesthesia, and supporting patient recovery. You will perform diagnostic testing, collect and prepare laboratory samples, operate and maintain veterinary medical and diagnostic equipment, and ensure accurate and thorough medical record documentation. You will provide hands-on care to ensure each animal’s comfort, safety, and well-being before, during, and after procedures. In this role, you will also play an important part in client education by providing clear instructions on post-treatment care, medication administration, preventive health, and overall pet wellness. Your ability to communicate effectively will help clients feel informed, confident, and supported throughout their visit. Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe clinic environment while following ARL policies, safety standards, and best veterinary practices is essential to success in this position.
Qualified candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and an associate’s degree in veterinary technology or certification as a Certified Veterinary Technician. Previous experience in a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, or animal care setting is preferred. Strong knowledge of animal handling, restraint techniques, anesthesia monitoring, and animal behavior is essential. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills, along with strong attention to detail, organization, and the ability to multitask effectively. Basic computer and mathematical skills are required, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
This position requires the ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds and to stand or sit for extended periods of time. The work environment may include exposure to animal odors, waste, bites, scratches, contagious diseases, and moderate noise levels. Flexibility, adaptability, and a calm, professional demeanor are important in this dynamic clinical setting.
At the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, you are not just taking a job; you are joining a mission-driven organization dedicated to improving the lives of animals and the people who love them. You will work alongside compassionate professionals, build valuable clinical skills, and make a meaningful impact every day. Together, we create a community where pets and people thrive.
Employment with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa is at-will, meaning either the employee or ARL may terminate the employment relationship at any time.
