Under general supervision, assists Golf Course Management in training and directing the seasonal staff. Performs a variety of golf course maintenance duties, including all routine golf course maintenance operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leads, delegates, and participates in golf course maintenance, special projects and in-house construction.
Participates in the daily set-up of golf course, including mowing, bunker maintenance, cutting cups, moving tee markers, trash removal, weeding planters, and placement of water coolers; inspects and cleans restroom facilities, clubhouse grounds, parking lot and sidewalks as needed.
Instructs staff on proper equipment use and work methods. Enforces safe working conditions with all job assignments.
Uses a wide variety of equipment used in maintaining a golf course, including, but not limited to, string trimmer, edging equipment, sod cutter, trencher, front-end loader, backhoe, large and small scale mowing equipment, riding boom sprayer, backpack sprayer, tractors, top dressers, aerators, and greens roller.
Applies soil amendments, prunes trees, lays sod and applies seed; sweeps or rakes debris; assists in cultural practices (aerating, spiking, topdressing etc.).
Removes trash and debris from ponds as needed, and seasonally installs and removes water aeration fountains in ponds.
Operates all equipment necessary for golf course maintenance.
Communicates with golf course management on a daily basis.
Assists and provides support with irrigation system repair as needed.
Assists and provides support with equipment maintenance and repair as needed.
Assists in application of fertilizers and pesticides to golf course turf and planters as needed.
Required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Required to perform snow removal duties as assigned.
May open the maintenance shop and run operations in the absence of the golf course management.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
High School diploma, GED or equivalent; and at least three seasons in golf course maintenance required. Previous experience in a lead capacity preferred. Some level of formal education in Turfgrass Management preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Must possess or have the ability to obtain Pesticide Applicator license within 12 months of hire.
May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department.
Knowledge of Thorncreek Golf Course Rules and Regulations.
Knowledge of agronomy, turfgrass science and basic golf etiquette.
Knowledge of tools, methods, and materials used in golf course maintenance and construction.
Knowledge of applicable safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of basic computer operation with related software.
Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with the public.
Skill in the safe and lawful operation of all equipment required to perform the job.
Ability to work well and communicate with the public and others.
Ability to train and lead maintenance employees in normal golf course operations, as well as the safe and proper operation of specialized golf course maintenance equipment.
Ability to work as a team member and to organize and lead staff as a team.
Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the functions of the position.
Ability to follow oral and written directions from others.
Ability to resolve problems.
Ability to work in a variety of adverse weather conditions, including heat, cold, precipitation, and wind.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, or flexible schedules.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly heavy work; exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have close visual acuity. The employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin.
