    General Information

     

    The City of Ames City Manager's Office has an exciting opportunity for a Housing Assistant!

     

    Under supervision of the Assistant City Manager, the Housing Assistant will provide administrative support to the Assistant City Manager or their designee around housing initiatives.

     

    Candidates interested in this opportunity can expect to work a varied schedule of less than 20 hours per week with the position ending on June 30th, 2026.

     

    This position is not benefit or paid leave eligible.

     

    The pay range for this position is $16.88 - $26.07 hourly, depending on candidates qualifications.

    Examples of Essential Job Functions

     

    + Assist in the documentation, correspondence, notification, and planning activities around housing initiatives as directed by the Assistant City Manager;

    + As assigned, arrange and coordinate internal and public meetings around housing. Provides administrative support and serves as recording secretary for any meetings scheduled throughout the year around housing. Meetings may be held during the day, evening hours, and weekends;

    + Composes and types correspondence as needed; proofread and edit department documents for proper grammar, punctuation, and accuracy as needed.

    + Develops and maintains contact with local agencies working on housing solutions.

    + Plans, implements and manages complex clerical assignments and projects; collects and analyzes information; prepares summary reports for supervisory review.

    + Conducts preliminary research or analysis for special projects as directed by the Assistant City Manager or his/her designee.

    + The Housing Assistant must have flexible hours of availability to meet the needs of the public which includes short, long and/or irregular hours.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    + High school diploma, HiSet, or GED.

    Preferred Experience:

    + Office clerical tasks and responsibilities, including general knowledge of a typical operation and customer service.

    + Working with Microsoft Office and phone systems.

    + Working on community housing solutions.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures including the utilization of automated technology to enhance office efficiency and effectiveness; considerable knowledge of departmental policies and administrative requirements as they affect clerical operations and responsibilities.

     

    Skill in written and oral communication. Skill with word processing and other office software; skill in operating a computer terminal and other standard office equipment.

     

    Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment in applying policies and procedures to routine situations; ability to establish and to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers at all levels, customers and the general public. Ability to take the initiative to resolve challenging issues and leverage resources as needed.

     

    Supplemental Information

    Selection Process:

    The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

     

    NOTE: Preference may be given to applicants possessing qualifications above the minimum.

    Physical & Environmental Characteristics:

    Required Physical Activities: Sitting, standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, lifting, talking, hearing, repetitive motions.

     

    Physical Characteristics of Work: Work is primarily sedentary and requires sitting and/or using various computer equipment 50% of the time; and standing and/or walking 20% of the time. Routinely requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, and infrequently requires the exertion of 10-25 pounds of force to lift or otherwise move objects.

     

    Vision Requirements: The minimum for those whose work is involved primarily with extensive reading, and preparing and analyzing text and/or data, and the use of a computer terminal.

     

    Environmental Conditions: The employee ordinarily works in an office environment and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

     

    Examples of Equipment Used on the Job: Computer terminal and hardware; a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, and specialized software; general office equipment such as copier, files and file cabinets, photocopy machine, and calculator; communications equipment such as telephone and fax machine.

    E-Verify Process:

    The City of Ames participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant’s Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
