    The Littleton Museum has an opening for Curator of Exhibits. The Curator of Exhibits leads and oversees the planning, design, implementation, and installation of exhibits for the museum galleries and other spaces. The Curator of Exhibits is responsible for providing the vision, inspiration, and processes that lead to stimulating, educational, accessible, and inclusive exhibits. Additionally, this position defines and creates the visual imagery of the museum via in-person and virtual visits that foster public engagement.

     

    The Curator of Exhibits will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of exhibitions, including history, fine arts, and eclectic subjects designed to inform and inspire the audience. Additionally, this position will play a key role in the revisioning of the Museum’s History Gallery, with an emphasis on developing through final design, fabrication/installation, and reopening phases the story lines of Littleton, including those of historically under-represented communities.

     

    The ideal candidate will be a proven leader, communicator, and collaborator, with a strong record of success in exhibit and graphic design, development, and implementation.

    Hiring pay range $74,290 - $78,200 per year

     

    This full-time position is exempt per FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Researches, designs, plans, and produces exhibits in collaboration with museum staff.

    + Develops graphic layouts, creates measured drawings, manages budgets, and works with museum staff and vendors to schedule, fabricate, and install exhibits; assisting with hands-on fabrication and installation as needed. Ensures exhibitions adhere to safety standards, meet ADA requirements, and are inclusive for diverse audiences.

    + Conducts evaluation and assessment of exhibitions to inform improvements and future planning.

    + Researches and books traveling exhibits as needed.

    + Leads collaborative exhibit team.

    + Supports AAM accreditation standards and professional museum practices related to exhibitions and interpretation.

    + Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the museum’s mission.

    + Participates in long-range planning for exhibitions and contributes to institutional planning initiatives.

    + Plans and executes marketing and promotional strategies for exhibitions, with support from museum staff, including development of content, visuals, and key messages.

    + Serves as member of scrum team for exhibit planning and project management.

    + Develops, produces, and coordinates the production of electronic and printed material to support and promote the exhibitions, events, and programming initiatives of the museum.

    + Generates new content and updates existing content to promote the museum’s programs, services, and events.

    + Plans, designs, and produces labels, signage, original artwork graphics and publications for the museum, boards and committees associated with the museum, museum events, and museum programs

    + Ensures efficient workflow of print projects including on-time delivery, responsible expenditure of budgets, and pursues opportunities for cost savings.

    + Adheres to the City’s procurement policies and procedures, including contract development, vendor selection, and purchasing requirements.

    + Works with other museum team members to create, plan, advertise, and execute programming.

    + Maintains exhibit content on museum/city website and social media platforms

    + Works with the city’s Communications Department to ensure consistency of messaging and branding.

    + Serves as a member of the museum leadership team and museum exhibit team assisting in developing strategies and plans for the department.

    + Encourages an environment of collaboration and teamwork.

    + Performs other similar assignments, duties, and projects as required.

    + May serve as an Emergency Worker.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    + Selects, trains, and evaluates employees if direct reports are added to museum staff.

    + Completes assigned supervisory training.

    + Provides guidance and assists employees in the fulfillment of responsibilities.

    + Assigns and directs work; addresses and resolves issues.

    + Manages employee performance, and fosters growth and development through meaningful, timely feedback and check-ins if direct reports are added to museum staff.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Bachelor’s degree in Museum Studies, Graphic Design, Commercial Art, Visual Communication, Advertising/Marketing, English, or a similar field; and

    + Five (5) years of experience in exhibit design; or

    + An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.

    + Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check and motor vehicle records check.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

    + Advanced knowledge and application skills in exhibit development, design, and implementation concepts.

    + Advanced knowledge in graphic design, color management, graphic formats, prepress techniques, scanning techniques, portable document format (PDF), copy writing, color proofing, and color correction.

    + Advanced verbal and communication skills.

    + Ability to communicate with and market to residents and visitors through creative messaging and delivery.

    + Knowledge and abilities involving the use of electronic information systems.

    + Basic knowledge and application skills of carpentry, painting, and lighting techniques.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

    + The essential duties/activities for the position are performed indoors; the indoor work environment includes exposure to odors, fumes, dust, mists, gases, and toxic, caustic chemicals. Minimal work is performed outdoors and subject to prevailing weather conditions.

    + Long periods of sitting, standing or walking may be required. Physical activities required to perform the essential duties include frequent handling (lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling) of large, bulky, and awkward objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
