Mechanical Test Engineer (Contract)
System One is seeking a Mechanical Test Engineer to support advanced nuclear reactor research and development efforts. This contract role is ideal for engineers who thrive in hands-on testing environments and enjoy collaborating across engineering, technical, and research teams to execute complex mechanical testing programs.

Position Summary
The Mechanical Test Engineer will be responsible for reviewing test requirements, designing and executing mechanical tests, and authoring comprehensive test documentation and reports. This role works closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure testing meets technical requirements, safety standards, and project schedules.
The successful candidate will operate as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians supporting experimental testing, validation, and qualification activities within a regulated nuclear environment.
This role requires onsite presence in Bellevue or Everett, WA.
The expectation is a minimum of three (3) days onsite per week, with some weeks requiring full-time onsite support (five days per week) depending on testing schedules and project needs.
Key Responsibilities
+ Assist in drafting and reviewing test requirements
+ Author test design documents, test procedures, test reports, and supporting documentation
+ Translate conceptual requirements into actionable test specifications, including instrumentation strategy and success criteria
+ Define, select, and validate measurement instrumentation (e.g., load cells, LVDTs, encoders, RTDs, strain gauges, temperature sensors)
+ Coordinate cross-functional efforts including fixture design, control system integration, and lab space planning
+ Manage test campaigns from concept through execution and reporting, including test setup, system validation, and post-test analysis
+ Support safe execution of testing activities, including work at elevated heights (typically under 60 feet)
+ Under guidance of senior engineers, support setup and commissioning of experimental equipment
+ Apply nuclear industry best practices and support continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications & Skills
+ Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering discipline
+ 3+ years of relevant experience in a testing, research, or R&D environment (preferred)
+ Experience post-processing and documenting experimental data
+ Experience with multiple test types (R&D, acceptance, validation, qualification)
+ Experience with strain, vibration, linear motion, static loading, and dynamic loading preferred
+ Experience working with large, complex mechanical systems preferred
+ Practical understanding of mechanical testing concepts including force/displacement, structural deflection, vibration/impact, dynamic loading, and environmental exposure
+ Familiarity with dimensional and inspection tools (e.g., Faro trackers, CMMs), even if not directly operating them
+ Ability to manage projects with multiple objectives and resolve competing priorities
+ Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently
+ Strong technical writing and communication skills
+ Safety-conscious mindset
+ Ability to work in a lightly structured environment requiring a mix of standards-based guidance and first-principles problem solving
+ Familiarity with engineering tools such as LabVIEW, SolidWorks, Jira/Confluence, and Microsoft Office 365 (preferred)
+ High degree of integrity, trustworthiness, and commitment to teamwork

+ Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods
+ Bending, stooping, grasping, gripping, and fine motor control required
+ Ability to safely lift up to 25 pounds
+ Repetitive work and visual/audio focused tasks
+ Standard office and laboratory work environments (>8 hours/day)
+ Travel: 0–5%
