    The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking an **_IT Director_** . The inaugural IT Director will establish and lead the information technology function for the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (SOM). The IT Director will set strategy and provide technological leadership across the school, with a primary focus on administrative and educational technologies. This role requires a highly collaborative approach, working closely with university and health system IT organizations to ensure alignment, seamless integration, and valued solutions that meet the school’s diverse needs.

     

    The IT Director works closely with senior IT, business, clinical, and/or academic leadership to develop and implement strategic plans that support the overall goals of the organization. Directs the IT strategy, infrastructure, development and support within the organization. Develops policies and practices to support organizational strategy. Participates in developing white papers and strategic statements related to technology to support the organization. Leads very large-scale, complex projects requiring multi-disciplinary coordination and significant vendor collaboration. Has day-to-day responsibility for a variety of applications and technologies that support a wide and diverse customer base. Recognized as an expert in the major IT function(s) in the realm of responsibility. Incumbents may be required to represent the division while working with external constituencies in the development of policies and practices that have an impact on the business of the division. Incumbents may be required to represent senior organizational leadership in executive meetings within and outside the organization.

     

    Job Scope and Complexity

     

    All IT functions of a large school/division of the university and health system that require a diverse and highly complex IT environment involving several highly technical functions, e.g., complex application development, networking, systems, etc.

     

    Typically has responsibility for a multi-million-dollar budget including both capital and operating expenses. Technology and business decisions made within this organization are highly complex and must take into account the various base of products and services supported across the organization in order to ensure appropriate integration. Typically has a large staff of direct and indirect reports of managers and staff of 20 or more. (Throughout this job description, “organization”

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    + Architect and implement a school-wide IT operating model and organization design, encompassing a central IT organization and coordinated departmental IT functions, to deliver a value-added IT and data strategy, enterprise architecture, and shared best practices.

    + Establish and oversee information management and governance frameworks that provide agile, efficient oversight of the school’s IT ecosystem, including standards, policies, and lifecycle management.

    + Lead the design, deployment, and continuous improvement of innovative educational technologies that enhance teaching, learning, assessment, and the student experience.

    + Serve as the school’s advocate and subject-matter representative in university and health system IT committees, planning, and enterprise initiatives, ensuring school-specific use cases and requirements are addressed.

    + Develop and execute a comprehensive information security strategy for the school, aligned with Hopkins policies and industry best practices; oversee risk management, compliance, and incident response in coordination with institutional security teams.

    Strategic Planning & Controlling

    + As a member of a senior management team, contributes or leads strategic and tactical planning to achieve organizational goals by prioritizing initiatives and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future technologies.

    + Develop technology solutions to anticipate the organization's needs, be cost-effective, reliable and compatible with existing and emerging technologies.

    + Anticipate change and be agile to respond when technology requirements emerge and evolve.

    + Based on understanding of organizational goals, mission, and culture, assess impact and effectiveness of technology to ensure it supports the organization’s needs.

    + Provides input to, and is has responsibility for, ongoing operations, budgets, a multi-year budget forecast and both strategic and operational planning.

    + Balances available personnel and funding resources to support meeting operational and strategic imperatives. Recognizes situations that present themselves and takes action with leadership to address significant issues.

    + Works with constituents in conjunction with other IT leaders to interpret customer business needs and makes recommendations for strategic investments in technology, applications, business process, personnel, etc. that meets the agreed upon goals of the organization.

    + Provides guidance for the development of technology related policies and procedures and represents IT on business-driven policy committees within and outside of Hopkins.

    + Ensures that applicable Hopkins policies, practices, regulatory requirements are addressed and followed within his/her area of responsibility.

    _Relationship Management_

    + Represents senior organizational leadership, often with delegated authority, in meetings both within and outside of Hopkins.

    + Represents the interest of the organization at industry, state and federal meetings to ensure that the best interests of the organization are considered.

    + Manage the customer relationship and satisfaction as well as adherence to the contractual obligations.

    + Create and promote a culture of excellent customer service.

    + Facilitate and influence organizational strategic initiatives to achieve mission and organizational goals.

    + Maintains relationships with strategic technology vendors for the organization.

    _Project/Product Responsibility_

    + Has direct responsibility for the design, development, and application of technical solutions that satisfy customer needs and are essential to the organization's ongoing operations.

    + Ensure continuous delivery of information technology support and services through direct management of service level agreements.

    _Staff Management_

    + Develops and implements an effective and efficient organizational structure that, within the bounds of its responsibilities, supports the ongoing operations of the organization.

    + Recruits, develops, retains, and organizes staff.

    + Perform other related duties as requested.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor's Degree.

    + Ten years of progressively responsible IT management experience including five years of management/supervisory experience.

    + Experience in academic, health care/medicine, science or comparable industry.

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Previous experience with HIPAA and FERPA.

    + Advanced degree in a technology or business field and proven experience leading large-scale, complex projects is desired.

    _This salary range does not include all components of the_ _School of Medicine's_ _compensation program. This position may be eligible for a discretionary bonus.
