    Outreach Attorney, Asylum & Immigration Law Clinic- Law School

     

    Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedOutreach Attorney, Asylum & Immigration Law Clinic- Law Schoolat its Detroit campus location.

    Essential functions (job duties):

    The Outreach Attorney will lead the outreach component of the Asylum & Immigration Law Clinic’s work, which currently includes drop-in legal advice hours at Wayne State, legal support for monthly workshops hosted by a community partner, and drop-in hours held in partnership with two other community organizations. The Outreach Attorney will supervise law clinic students providing brief information and advice in these settings and provide additional support to community partner initiatives. This position will report to the Director, Asylum & Immigration Law Clinic.

     

    Provide legal expertise, including legal advice and brief assistance, and legal supervision of clinic students in community settings.

     

    Provide direct legal representation to clinic clients when students are unavailable, representation by a student would be inappropriate, or clinical faculty members are unavailable.

     

    Works on special projects that require specialized legal knowledge or the exercise of professional judgment (e.g. organizing community legal education workshops, creating and updating outreach and training materials) as assigned.

     

    Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Education Doctorate degree

    •JD Degree or Equivalent from an accredited college or university.

    •Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan or become licensed within six months hire.

     

    Experience Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)

     

    At least 5 years’ experience working as a lawyer in the area of immigration law, specifically in the areas of removal defense and humanitarian immigration.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    •Demonstrated competency in the practice of immigration law, and detailed knowledge of the ethical rules applicable to attorneys.

    •Strong written and oral communication skills.

    •Strong collaboration skills.

    •Strong independent working and problem-solving skills.

    •Access to reliable transportation (position requires local travel).

    •Strong preference for bilingual/multilingual applicants.

    •Strong preference for applicants with experience in a law clinic setting (including as a student attorney or intern), experience supervising law student interns/law clerks, and/or experience working in a legal aid/nonprofit setting.

    •Demonstrated history of collaboration across entities and professions preferred.
